Data, Functions, and Understanding • Data provide a convenient entryway into the study of mathematics • Review of mathematical ideas can take place while new material is being learned • Data provides a context for mathematical ideas • Functions based on data can be studied early and often in the algebra sequence • Data and Functions will lead to student understanding at the developmental level

  3. Why mess with data? • Students deserve to know why the material they are learning is useful • Students are more motivated to learn if they can connect to the content • Context provides a reason for applying mathematical ideas
