Dual approach • Openness: • Horizon 2020 open to participation from across the world • ca. 1500 collaboration projects / year • More self-funding by partner countries (BRICs, etc.) Targeted actions: • Thematic: identifying areas for international cooperation • Differentiation by countries/regions to target partners for cooperation

Cooperation with Malaysia under FP7 • 17 projects ongoing, overall value > 90 million EUR • Majority of partners are universities, but also research organizations, companies, government agencies • Main fields of cooperation: Food, Agriculture & Fisheries and Biotechnology; Nano-sciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies; Health. Top 5 international partners: UK, DE, FR, TH, IT
