Unit 9: Geometry – 6th Grade Lesson 2: Area of a parallelogram
Vocabulary • parallelogram – • A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.
Area of a Parallelogram • Area of a Parallelogram: A = bh • where b = base (length of any of its sides) • h = height (the perpendicular distance between the side whose length is the base and the opposite side) • Ex. Find the area of a parallelogram. • 5 m • 2 m A = bh • = 5(2) • = 10 m2
Finding an unknown dimension • Ex. The area of a parallelogram is 45 cm2 and the height is 9 cm. What is the base? • A = bh(Write the formula for the area of a parallelogram.) • 45 = b(9) (Substitute the known values into the equation.) • 45= b(9)(Divide both sides of the formula by 9 to solve for b.) • 9 9 • 5 cm = b (The length of the base is 5 cm.)
