FOOD • Austrian food has been influenced by German, Czech, Italian, and Hungarian • Common Austrian food is meat, dumplings, and fish • Austria is know for its Viennese cooking, especially cakes, pastries, and Wiener Backhendel (VEE-nah BAHK-hayn-dl • Two favorite Austrian dishes are Knodel(NOH-del), or stuffed dumplings, and Tafelspitz(TAH-fehl- SPEETZ),or boiled beef. • Apfelstrudel (ahp-FEHL-stroo-dehl),or apple strudel, is famous Austrian desserts.

  3. What people in Austria do • People in Austria love to drink coffee. • They also like watching people go bye. • On weekends and holidays they go to their vacation homes on the countryside. • Some people spend their vacations at farms that offer activities such as horseback riding or fishing.

  4. Clothes • People in Austria wear Trachten (TRAHK-tun) • For ball dancing girls wear dresses and boys wear suites. • Trachten are the traditional clothes for Austria • They also wear Trachten some time when they ball dance

  5. Language • Most people in Austria speak German. • Many Austrians also speak local languages that are similar to German. • The local language sound different from region to region. • To talk to people in different parts of Austria,most speak Hochdeutsch(hoch-DOYTCH), or High German. • Sometimes it is called standard German. • Hochdeutsch was first spoken in the mountain areas of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

School • Austrian children must attend school from age six to age fifteen. • They must attend Volksschule(FOLK- schoo-luh), or elementary, four years. • At age eleven, students choose either a four-year middle school or an eight-year secondary school. • Secondary prepare students to attend universities and teach subjects such as math, music, art, and science.

Plants and Animals • Almost one-fourth of Austria’s land is used for nature reserves and parkland. • Forests cover almost half of Austria’s land. • Trees in Austria include oak, spruce, beech, fir, larch, and stone pine. • They also have many animals like marten, brown bears, ibex, red deer, marmots, and chamois. • Birds are purple herons and avocets. • Fish are carp, rainbow trout, and perch.

  8. Holidays and Festivals • Palm Sunday is befor Easter. • Palmkatizchen(palm-KETZ-chen) blesses by priests. • Palmkatzchen,or braided pussy-willow branches, are symbols of rebith. • Christmas Eve, Austria adults decorate christmas trees.

Woman and family • Do you know that women in Austria have the same rights as men but get paid less then men do?,and they do the same thing • Most of the time they stay at home and take care of the household while there husbands work • Because they want a careers, many of them get married and have children at a later age. • Most of there families are small, they only have one or two childern.
