EARTHQUAKES .Fernanda Nuñez .Juan Carlos Macias • Paula Simone • Montserrat Pérez Moreno .Victoria White
DEFINITION An earthquake is the result of an impact to the Earth’s crust that creates seismic waves. Seismic waves are formed when the impact reaches the surface so it causes a violent movement. One of the most dramatic processes happen during an Earthquake.
HOW IT WORKS Earth plates are slowly moving. As they move, they pull others. Their movement is small but sometimes they move so aggressively that make an earthquake begins.
EXPERIMENTMATERIALS LEGO bricks 2 rubber bands 4 small rubber balls 2 large plaques
HYPOTHESIS With this experiment we are going to show how earthquakes modify the ground floor and cause damages in the surface. Can it be ?
FIRST Insert the rubber balls between the boards in each corner, placing them about 5 cm each from the edges.
THEN Attach a large flat LEGO mounting plate to the top of the shake table by slipping in underneath the rubber bands.
FINALLY Build a series of LEGO towers of increasing high, measure the high of each tower and shake the table
RESULTS The Experiment worked well. We could observe how earthquakes transformed ground floor.
CONCLUSION Earthquakes change the Earth by creating faults and damages in the environment.
