How do you interpret the bible? • Interpretation or “Bring out the meaning” • The goal of interpreting the bible should be to apply the meaning of what you learn to your life. • A few basic principles:
How do you interpret the bible? • Principle 1: Interpret the Bible by the Bible: We must not set one passage of scripture against another passage. • This means that you always read Bible verses and passages in Context!
How do you interpret the bible? • Principle 2: Interpret the Bible Literally: What this means is that you should interpret the Bible as it is written. • Don’t read into it something that isn’t there. • Don’t skip over something that is there.
How do you interpret the bible? • Principle 3: Interpret the Bible objectively: • One must first ask what a given scripture was intended to mean to the people for who it was originally written. Only then can you ask what meaning it has for you today. • Your “private interpretation” will only be meaningful with the guidance of the Holy Spirit combined with your own diligent study.
Watch out for twisted scripture • When you interpret scripture to fit your own desires and pre-conceived ideas, you just might change it from truth to error. • “Scripture twisting” is what happens when people interpret the bible to suit their own false beliefs. • A cult is “a perversion, a distortion of biblical Christianity.
