  1. CCNY PREM Summer 2011 Professional Development PEPSE: Partnership in Experimental Physical Science Education Jeffrey F. Morris, CUNY City College, DMR 0934206 CCNY PREM has developed a novel professional development course titled “Partnership in Experimental Physical Science Education”. The course took place during the weeks of July 5-15, 2011. The content of this course is multidisciplinary, introducing concepts and applications of engineering, chemistry, physics and mathematics through the lens of contemporary research methodologies and guided inquiry. The course consisted of research presentations which included hands-on demonstrations in the areas of Rheology of Complex Fluids (Jeff Morris Lab), Granular Flow (Mark Shattuck Lab), Particle Assembly at Interface (Ilona Kretzschmar Lab), Biopolymers (Raymond Tu Lab), and Electronic Materials for Energy Storage (Dan Steingart Lab). After each research presentation and demonstration exercise, participants spent a few hours in each research lab working with the tools and equipment used to study the phenomena under investigation. Participants were then guided by PREM faculty to create smaller scale inexpensive tools that will be taken back to their high school classrooms. Over the next few months teachers will fine tune their tools so that they can produce similar results as observed in our labs. Participants will implement hands-on experimental material science modules developed at CCNY PREM labs in their current curriculum and transfer the knowledge gained at CCNY to their students. The PREM team will visit participants’ high school classrooms to determine the modules’ efficiency and student engagement in the PREM sponsored activities.
