Definition of ‘Language Learning Strategies’ “Any set of techniques or learning behaviours, whether observable or unobservable, which language learners reported employing for the purpose of enhancing their language learning outside the classroom setting.”
Purpose of the study To examine use of out-of-class language learning strategies by language learners learning English for Science and Technology at Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), Thailand and Hanoi Agricultural University (HAU), Vietnam.
Research questions 1. What is the overall frequency of use of out-of-class language learning strategies by EST students at SUT and HAU? 2. Is there a relationship between the use of strategies and their cultural background? If so, what are the variation patterns?
Sample and instrument 488 students learning EST at SUT and 326 at HAU were asked to respond to the 4-rating scale strategy questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire comprises 20 out-of-class language learning strategies under five different purposes.
Variable investigated The leaners’ cultural background, i.e. Thai and Vietnamese
