Basic Facts • Life Span: 1823 – 1886 • Studied at Harvard Medical School • Lack of funds prevented him from finishing course • Invented the bean bag and wooden dumbbells Diocletian Lewis
Promoting Physical Education and Good Health • Did more to promote Physical Education than any other single individual • Edited and published a medical magazine in New York which he supported physical exercise as a part of public education • From 1852-1863 he was engaged in lecturing on hygiene, physiology of the human body, and the promotion of abstinence of alcohol
Contributions to our profession • Created a system (Dio Lewis System) with vigorous exercise routines • Routines accompanied by music, dance and social games to get the heart rate up • Wanted boys, fat men, and women to have a system they could use to exercise
Contributions to our profession Cont. • Opened the Normal Institute of Physical Education in Boston • In seven years, 500 pupils graduated • His influence had much to do with the establishment of the present system of physical culture in most of the institutions of leaning in the U.S.
I Agree • I agree with everything Lewis did for our profession • He created a system that can work for everyone and anyone, and his lectures of physical education and promotion of good health and hygiene is how his philosophies can be useful in teaching
