What is Medical Physics? • An interdisciplinary, cutting-edge field at the intersection of physics, engineering, and medicine • Medical physics provides the key science behind three notable specialties of modern medicine: • Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and Nuclear Medicine and contributes substantially to others: • Cardiology, Molecular Medicine, … • Fulfilling careers in academia, clinical work, industry, government labs
James T. Dobbins III, PhD, FAAPM – Director Medical Physics Graduate Program at Duke • Approved by Board of Trustees in 2004; in 9th academic year • Balanced MS and PhD training programs • 2nd largest graduate program in the U.S. • Among the top 3 or 4 programs in quality • Draws 50 faculty from 5 departments • 59 students in 2013-14; >120 grads; excellent placement • Outstanding scholarly output: >400 publications and presentations by students • A leader in the national MP educational enterprise
Rationale for Proposed M.S. Degree in Medical Physics at DKU • The need for medical physics professionals in China and other Asian countries • Growing facilities need scientifically prepared practitioners • China alone needs >1500 medical physicists by 2020 • Opportunities for Duke medical physics faculty • Enriching teaching and research experiences/collaborations • Advancing best practices via Duke-DKU exchanges • Furthering the Duke mission • Civic and global engagement • Promoting and enhancing Duke brand of academic quality
Master of Science (M.S.) Curriculum40 credit hours; 2 years • Emphasize 3 tracks (from existing 4 at Duke) • Radiation therapy • Imaging • Nuclear medicine
Class Size, Timing and Location • Class size (5-year): 15, 15, 15, 18, 20 per year • 1styear Fall: Courses at DKU • 1styear Spring: Courses at DKU • June to Dec.: Research and courses at Duke • 2ndyear Fall: Qualifying exam to graduate (or to move to Duke PhD) • 2ndyear Spring: Research and courses at DKU Completing and defending thesis • Research work could be done at • Duke campus or • DKU affiliated hospitals or • DKU campus
Teachingand Mentoring: Faculty • All faculty members will be Duke Faculty or DKU/Adjunct faculty approved by Duke graduate school • All courses will be taught in English • Flexible schedule for courses • Classroom teaching • Locally hired DKU faculty or adjunct faculty • Faculty at Durham travelling to DKU (pool of 27 faculty) • Faculty at Durham via remote learning tools (Seminar) • Co-mentorship for each student: • Durham faculty as primary advisor (in Durham or visitation) • DKU-faculty or DKU adjunct faculty as co-advisor (at DKU) • Quality of research: presented in national or international meetings (ideally write up a manuscript for publication)
Duke Quality and Ethical Standards • Academic quality • Initial Durham based Director (MPAC selected Fang-Fang Yin) • Durham MPAC oversight • 3rd semester at Durham with co-mentorship arrangement • Duke graduate school re-evaluation after 3 years • Ethical and scientific integrity training • Mandatory training at beginning of program • Research design ethics • Duke IRB or IACUC approval for ALL projects involving human subjects or animals • Additional required local approvals to meet regulatory and ethics requirements for projects in China or other countries • At a MINIMUM, all projects will meet Duke IRB/IACUC standards
Financial Model • Major income • Tuition (tuition minus scholarships: ~$1.3 million steady state) • Major expenses (~$0.8 million steady state) • Faculty teaching and administrative effort • Administrative staff • Operational/office expenses • Faculty mentoring and travel – minor • Notes on the financial model • Financial model prepared with assistance of budget staff in Provost’s office • Program covers direct costs including start up by fifth year • Contribution to overall DKU expenses built into budget • Any surplus from program remains in China; however, Duke bills DKU for all necessary expenses of Durham program, including faculty time • DKU and Provost will backstop finances; no negative impact on finances of Durham program
