  4. Conneaut School District Crawford Central School District PENNCREST School District and the Crawford County Career and Technical School K-12 School Partners

  5. 21st Century Girls Camp • Made possible through a Regional Career Education Partnership Grant from the Regional Center for Workforce Excellence • Funding directed towards exposing girls and other underrepresented groups to careers in the S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) occupations. • Camp held on June 17 & 18, 2009 for 7th and 8th grade girls Career Education activities

  6. 21st Century girls camp Camp participants at Clarion University – Venango Campus, get a campus tour from Bill Hallock, learn about metal fabrication at Specialty Fabrication and Powder Coating in Franklin and visit the Lumber Inspector Program held by the National Hardwood Lumber Association at the Venango Technical Center.

  7. 21st Century girls camp Building Bridges Activity at Penn State University, the Behrend College Participants learned about how careers in engineering impact our every day lives.

  8. 21st Century Girls Camp Also while at Penn State, the Behrend College, participants dissected sheep brains and eyeballs to learn about their parts and various occupations available in the sciences.

  9. Replacing the Career Camp in 2009 and 2010 is the summer camps. Due to the renovations at the Crawford County Career and Technical Center, the traditional Career Camp could not be held. Instead three camps were offered. • Electrical Wiring • Lego Robotics • Tool & Die The regular Career Camp will return in 2011. Summer Camp

  10. Electrical Wiring Camp participants get a tour of the Crawford County CTC electrical renovations by the Contractor’s Project Manager.

  11. Electrical Wiring Camp instructor, Rod Frazier works with a student on the camp project. Camp participant works on wiring project which consisted of 3 and 4 way switches. Participants enjoy the hands-on projects.

  12. New offering that was made possible through a partnership with Crawford Central School District. Participants received Lego Mind Storm t-shirts donated by Lego Education. The Lego Robotics Camp will be available in 2010 and will be offered as a camp option in the regular Career Camp in 2011. Lego Robotics

  13. Lego Robotics Instructor Jeff Bossard helps a student with the computer program used to download instructions to the robot (pictured left). The program uses math calculations to instruct the robots movements.

  15. Lego Robotics Don’t be fooled because it is made by Lego. Building the robot out of Lego's is the easy part. Programming the robot is a whole other challenge. Once programming is mastered, the robot is capable of picking up balls and using sensors to recognize sounds or solid objects in it’s way. However there is no voice recognition programming at this level – yet.

Each year Precision Manufacturing Institute partners with the Crawford County K-12 Career Education Alliance to offer the Tool & Die Camp. • This year students learned about CNC machines. • This camp takes place at PMI so that students can see first hand the various machines that are used in the Tool & Die Industry and the various post-secondary opportunities that are offered by PMI.   17. Tool & DIe The instructor shows students how to program the CNC Mill to perform the necessary cuts for their project. On this particular day they were making personalized metal picture frames.

  18. Tool & Die The instruction is up close and personal. Students get to see how these machines work and to think about safety measures at all times.

  19. Tool & Die Students take the raw materials and learn about what it takes to make a finished product.

  20. Tool & Die While the CNC machines are cool, students also learn about the computer programs that help engineers design products.

  21. When the Career Camp returns in 2011, students will have the opportunity to participate in these other camp areas: • Auto Body • Culinary Arts • Health Occupations • Cosmetology • Building Construction • Law Enforcement • And much more! 2011 Career Camp

All Crawford County K-12 teachers are eligible to participate • Teacher’s are required to spend 40 hours shadowing a local business or organization to learn more about the business and the products or services they provide. • Teacher’s are required to produce a lesson plan that they can implement in their classroom that will demonstrate how what they are teaching to students is used in the workplace. Educator in the workplace

Once teacher’s have successfully completed their 40 hours and produced a lesson plan they are awarded 45 Act 48 credit hours to maintain their teaching credentialing in PA. • Teacher’s of all subject areas can participate in this program – science, math, history, English, family & consumer sciences, art, music, etc. • The Crawford County CTC instructor’s are also eligible to participate in this program.   24. Educator in the workplace Rebekah Rosenberger (left), elementary teacher from Crawford Central School District’s Second District school, spent her 40 hours at Channellock, Inc. Michele King (right) served as the contact for Rebekah’s visit to Channellock and helped to provide her with a well-rounded experience of their manufacturing and business processes.

Since starting the Educator in the Workplace Act 48 Program and Educator in the Workplace Graduate Course, over 300 educators have participated in visiting local businesses and organizations. • Besides local manufacturers like Channellock, Inc., teachers have visited local libraries, dental offices, tool & die shops, the Department of Environmental Protection, local artists, Crawford County Historical Society, accounting firms, etc. Educator in the workplace

  27. The Great Hospital Adventure The Great Hospital Adventure is an 1st or 2nd grade program that is made possible through a partnership between the Meadville Medical Center Foundation, the Crawford County Career and Technical Center’s Health Occupations program and the Crawford County K-12 Career Education Alliance. The program uses 8 puppets to tell a story about a boy name Josh, who falls out of a tree and breaks his leg and the health professionals he meets during his adventure. CTC Health Occupation students present the program to the students. The program includes a 20 minute video and then 10 minute discussion about the story. Each student in the class receives a Great Hospital Adventure coloring book so they can share the story with their parents. All 8 puppets are based on real people working at the Millcreek Community Hospital. Even Josh and his sister are real people in the Erie Community.

  28. Career day activity 7th and 8th grade career day activities include speakers from various occupations. The picture to the right shows a message therapist from Meadville Medical Center conducting a demonstration of techniques on a student volunteer. Local businesses and organizations enjoy the chance to participate in Career Day activities so that they can inform students about career opportunities right here in Crawford County. Most speakers bring in visual aides or have the students conduct an activity that demonstrates the skills needed to work in that field.

  29. The Crawford County K-12 Career Education Alliance searches for grant opportunities to support K-12 career education activities. Grant funds are sought each year to support field trips to local business and industry. Field trips provide students with the opportunity to experience the technology being used, hear about what products are being made and see what working conditions are like in various work settings. Field Trips Field trips take students to places like C & J Industries, The Meadville Tribune, Meadville Medical Center, Dad’s Pet Care, ChipBLASTER, Nutec, Channellock, Acutec Precision Machining, Rolling Fields, Lord Corporation, Tech Tool and Mold, Buck’s Fabricating (Mercer County), Erie Insurance (Erie County), Hamot (Erie County), Carnegie Science Center (Pittsburgh), WJET-TV 24 (Erie County), etc.

  31. The Crawford County K-12 Career Education Alliance is involved in many activities within the public school districts. Such as Business Week, Industry Clubs at Meadville Middle School and Cambridge Springs High School, operation of the Job Shadowing Program, and providing a variety of career education presentations to students and teachers. So much more
