Causes • Epilepsy is not contagious. In 7 out of 10 cases doctors describe the disease as idiopathic, which means the causes is unknown. In other cases causes may be maternal injury, infection, or illness that affects developing fetus during pregnancy.
Symptoms • Epileptic seizures have different symptoms or characteristics depending on where the seizure begins in the brain and how the electrical discharge spreads across the brain. Epileptic seizures can be divided into two categories.
Prevention • Because so many cases of epilepsy have no known cause there are no preventions guidelines. However anything that injures the brain can cause epilepsy.
Treatments • Epilepsy research is an active field. One promising technique now in development is called vagus nerve stimulation. • Three goals of treating epilepsy are medication, surgury, and ketogenic diet.
