  2. Developing Comprehension • Retelling is one of the best devices for developing both comprehension and awareness of text structure. • Has proved to be effective in improving comprehension and providing a sense of text structure for average and struggling learners.

  3. Combining Questions • Combining questions with retelling enhances the effectiveness of the technique.

  4. Being Successful at Retelling • To be successful at retelling students must: • Comprehend the story • Understand the components of a story • Be able to analyze the story • Have the language required to tell the story • Have the cognitive tools to retell the selection in sequence

  5. Developmental Retelling Pretelling Guided Retelling • Students learn to explain everyday tasks. • The students must be able to think backwards to reconstruct the steps of a task. • The students must be able to think forward to put the steps in order. • Students are first aided by illustrations and artifacts • It is a major developmental level that improves student comprehension of selections as well as their language and cognitive skills.
