Galileo Galilee Venus Phases Moons on Jupiter
Galileo Gets in because: • Said he wouldn’t teach his beliefs about a heliocentric world • Wrote a book that argued a heliocentric world makes more sense • Made Pope Urban VIII look like a fool • Interpreted certain bible verses to fit his sun centered world
Galileo’s contribution to Science: Galileo went blind from studying sunspots on the sun with his telescope. • Made the telescope very powerful • Discovered that Earth has an attractive force that is equal for all objects (gravity) • Discovered “Friction” Pope John Paul recognizes the wrong doing of the Catholic Church and apologized for the action against Galileo in 1992
Isaac Newton • Born on the day that Galileo died • Had a rough childhood • Went to University of Cambridge in England • Studied Philosophy (science)
Isaac Newton • Wrote “Principia” at the age of 24. • This book explained how the entire universe moves! ( ex: phet website) • Became well known and taught at U of Cambridge • Not a very good teacher – mostly did research on
Isaac Newton • Studies light – discovered white light was made of collection of other colors • Built a new telescope using mirrors that was much smaller and much more powerful than Galileo’s. • Very religious and obsessed with the bible
Albert Einstein • Grew up in Germany • Studied Physics & Math • Wanted to be a high school teacher… couldn’t find a job • Became patent office worker • In 1905 wrote a 3 page paper on relativity
Time Dilation If the speed of light is constant – time is not constant • http://www.kcvs.ca/site/projects/specialRelativity.html
Albert Einstein • His published paper caught the attention of the most famous physicist of the day, Max Plank • Einstein becomes well known • In 1916 writes another paper on “General Relativity”. Becomes very famous as this paper explained what Isaac Newton could not.
General Relativity • Space and time are one of the same • Space is a fabric that bends due to masses • Gravity is just the result of the bending of this fabric
