Investigative (Analytic) - Like to observe, learn, evaluate, or solve problems. This type is associated with scientific/academic pursuits. Prefer to analyze a problem, evaluate options and data, set a plan of action, and analyze the results. Realistic (Adventuring/Producing) Interested in athletics, good with their hands, prefer to work with objects, machines, plants or animals rather than people. Prefer to do the job without a lot of talk or argument, do it right the first time, get to the point. R I Conventional (Organizing) - Like to work with data, numbers, more than people. Like detail, tangible products, and have little tolerance for ambiguity. Like following others; instructions rather than being in charge. Prefer to followa defined structured plan of action. Attentive to detail. Enjoy putting allthe pieces of a plan together. Artistic (Creative) -Interested in artistic expression. Like to work in unstructured situations using imagination and creativity. Before the interview-1 • Practice, practice, practice • Rehearse with friends-mock interviews • Do more than rehearse-study the questions! • Research and gather information about what may be asked • Become an expert in interviewing • Become an expert about their organization • Become an expert about the person interviewing you
Before the interview-2 • Google everyone you will meet • Find out where the interviewer went to school, organizations they belong to, hobbies, etc. • Research the organization-management structure, philosophy, products, services, etc. • This WILL boost your self confidence • Identify your skills and talk about them
Before the interview-3 • Video tape yourself in mock interview-watch eye contact and nervous habits • Allow yourself to be ok if you don’t have all the answers-we rarely do-did you make 100% on all tests? • Study and memorize your resume-you would not be here if they were not impressed • Visualize the interview in a positive mindset • Buy new clothing for position-builds confidence • Think about successful introverts (Gates, Gandhi)
Interview day • You still face the unknown • Minimize any surprises • Gear up for small talk-before interview-practice with friends • Know where you are going-know all traffic patterns-minimize anxiety • Bring notes and a portfolio-for key points and to show off your achievements • Do not under sale yourself
Post interview • Ask the interviewer whenyou will hear about decision-relieves anxiety • Call, write or email interviewer at a 10 day to 2 week period after to show how being an introvert will not be a problem • Thank her/him and point out another skill • Be positive and genuine and use his/her name-he/she will appreciate it
