An approach to E-safety? Presented by Andy Ruddick (Curriculum Manager) David Lewis College
Aims and Objectives To share approach to E-safety within David Lewis– key findings and lessons learnt Particular focus on some of the work carried out through peer learner work
The David Lewis College • Residential Specialist College – Residential and day Students • Working with learners aged 16-25 • Pre-entry level 2 – Level 1 • Caters for epilepsy and communication disorders (Autism, fragile X, downs syndrome, Retts syndrome) • The Mission is to… ‘To provide optimum transition from childhood to adulthood’
The Challenge faced? Parents – What support do they require? Making E safety training relevant to Learners? Staff – What training do they need? Bureaucracy?
Strategies adopted for successful training/awareness around e-safety • Link with local Police Liaison Officer – training provided for learners, staff and Parents – linked to CEOP ambassador training • CEOP – web based resource/ safety button facility placed on all computers • Visual reference points around IT working areas within College • Individual risk assessment around safe use • Shift in thinking re: social networking led to deploying a peer approach…
The Peer Approach... • Discovery that a number of learners already used facebook and they were aware of the dangers surrounding its use but other Learners wanted to but weren’t aware • Implementation of peer training through Student Council The Presentation? Use of Games/ video’s and quizzes to raise profile of e-safety and it’s importance when using computers Self made video – downloaded onto In-folio e-safety tab – accessible to all learners
The Impact? • Increased learner understanding around e-safety – demonstrated through learner surveys • Empowered the Students (those involved in training and others too) • Presentation being recorded to be used within context of Student induction whilst acting as a reference point for both Students and staff • College twitter and Facebook usage increased with full endorsement (through changed policy) by IT team.
