  3. Meet Author and Illustrator: David McPhail • David McPhailis a popular author and illustrator of many books, including Edward and the Pirates and Andrew's Bath. He lives in Newburyport, Massachusetts. • He grew up by the sea. He likes to put animal characters in his stories. • He believes that each day is an adventure and each book is a new beginning.

  4. Genre – Fiction In fiction, there can be a mix of realistic and make-believe parts. • Look for: • Ways the story is like real life • Things that could not happen in real life. Story Summary:A boy sets out to sail his boat in a puddle and is joined by a frog, a turtle, an alligator, a pig, and an elephant.

  5. Pop Quiz Q. What does the author do? A. He or she writes the stories. Q. What does the illustrator do? A. He or she draws the pictures.
