Working in Cold Conditions • List 4 reasons why we need to worry about the cold? Removes body heat, can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, increased risk of back injuries • How can the cold affect you on the job? Effects ability to bend, finger dexterity, strength of grip • List 4 things to keep you warm. Wear multiple layers of clothing, mitten rather then gloves, cover head, overshoes to keep feet dry • Should you wear sunglasses in the winter? Yes with UV protection
Working in Cold Conditions (cont.) • List the symptoms of frostbite. Extremities such as hands, feet, nose, ears, etc, parts become pale and numb • List 4 “Do’s” if you have frostbite. Move to warm place, blow on affected parts, remove tight clothes or jewelry, obtain medical help • List “Do Not’s” if you have frostbite. Do not rub, break blisters • What is the difference between frostbite and hypothermia? Frostbite parts freeze, hypo; body temperature drops
Working in Cold Conditions (cont.) • List the symptoms of hypothermia. Excessive shivering, blue lips and fingertips, slurred speech and poor coordination • List 4 “Do’s” if someone has hypothermia. Get into dry clothes, get to shelter ,stay warm ,drink fluids- non alcoholic • List 2 “Do Not’s” if someone has hypothermia. Do not take alcohol, do not submerse in water to warm up, do not exert yourself • For temperatures below –11 C, how fast can skin freeze? Expose flesh can freeze in one minute
