  1. UEFA Study Group Scheme, season 2013/2014 Club and coach development in a grassroots club Ready FC (children/youth football) Bjørn Frode Strand, Technical Director Anders Mortensholm, Head of Development

  2. AGENDA • Ready Football • Club development • Succes factors for a grasroots club • People development • Leadership • Coach development • Player development • Practice today

  3. WHAT IS READY FOOTBALL TODAY • City club with 750 football players • Highly competent board of members • A professional coaching staff with 3 full time and 18 part time coaches • A set of values guiding everything we do • People development more than player development • Parents with a high degree of involvement • Anchored and profund technical framework (club, team, player and coach development)

  4. CLUB DEVELOPMENT

  5. SUCCES FACTORS FOR A GRASROOTS CLUB – SETTING GOALS "If you don't know where you are going, you'll probably end up somewhere else« «In Ready FC all members enjoy themselves, and get challenges depending on their level and motivation»

  6. SUCCES FACTORS FOR A GRASROOTS CLUB - STRATEGY • Drawing up the road to our destination • Ambitious and realistic to our goal • Anchoring and support from parents, players and society • Sustainability

  7. SUCCES FACTORS FOR A GRASROOTS CLUB – FRAMEWORK • 1 out of 100-300 players ends up professional. What about the others? We want to develop good citizens. • People development is more important than player development, BUT players need to feel the player development • Same basic ideas as Norwegian FAs Quality Club Concept • Quality in: managment, technical framework, recruitment, training of people, people relations and communication • The right financial model • The right people (intrinsic motivation and club) • The right values (human leadership)

  8. PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT • The "Ready Code" - Code of conduct • Readyidols and assistent coaches • Group exercices in training camps • Make healthy dinner for your family • Referee course from 13 years old • Autonomy in trainings • Self regulated exercices (i.e. warm up) • Making players more self-relaint by communicating directly to the coach • Parents and coaches get more than football education

  9. LEADERSHIP • Leadership based on Jim Collins’ research. Find coaches who share the club’s values. Employ a coach for the club, not only for a team. The same thinking with volunteers and parent coaches. • Parents meet with the management every season (club strategy, year plan, roles) • When rules are broken, the sport management and coach meet and contact the parents • Strong focus on coach development (next slide) • Implementation of technical framework («you can only do this») • Learning happens only in healthy relations

  10. COACH DEVELOPMENT

  11. OUR COACHES • The full time coaches are respected like other employees in private business sector (terms, pension, office, study tours) • We have coaches who choose Ready because of the project, development model and environment • What kind of coaches are we recruiting?

  12. WHO ARE THE BEST COACHES FOR READY Beeing a healthy idol Passionate Cooperative Enthusiastic Positive Loyal to the club Seeing the person Teaching ability Involving the parents Consistent Fair Creating team spirit Knowing the idea of football Able to show basic skills

  13. COACH DEVELOPMENT MODEL

  14. HOW WE DEVELOP OUR PROFESSIONAL COACHES? • Creating a safe and trustfull environment • Coach development model based on our player development model and technical framework • Filming coaches and discussion afterwards • Extended meetings and courses • Visiting other clubs/environments • The McKinsey-method: "How can we help you achieve your dream?"

  15. HOW WE DEVELOP PARENT COACHES • Two collective sessions a year by our professional coach developer • One professional coordinator for each age group • Session plans for children (6-12 years)

  16. CLUB DEVELOPMENT NEED TO INCLUDE A PLAYER DEVELOPMENT MODEL

  17. HOW WE DEVELOP OUR PLAYERS • Playing style and technical framwork based on inspiration from KNVB, Ajax, Barcelona, Sporting Lisboa and Norwegian clubs and from research and documentation • Gameoriented methodology (Nor, Hol, Por, Spa) - high intensity • Coaching on prosess, not on result • Competent coaches in groups with high learning motivation • Additional offer to those who want more training and seriousity • Talent is mostly about mentality (The Talent Code) • We help the most ambitious players on their way if it is needed

  18. PRACTISE TODAY • Same framework as Ready Academy (extra practices after school) • Clothing, fruit, water bottles • Employed coaches • 28 boys born in 2003 • Three differentiated groups based on present level and mentality • Session plans to all participants
