I. History of the movement • Historians agree with LGBT individuals were insulted throughout world history. In Europe: • Earliest researches (19. Century): Freud and Magnus Hirschfield «Homosexualor bisexual orientation occurring naturally.» « It is not a illness or crime» • Magnus Hirschfield «Berlin's Institute for Sexual Science» • Hirschfield's great library was destroyed and the books burnt by Nazis on May 10, 1933.
In United States: • Lgbt Advocacy groups(World War II)in Greenwich Village and Harlem. • After the War, Senator Joseph McCarthy's investigation led to the first American-based political demands for homosexual citizens’ fair treatment in mental health, public policy, and employment. the 1950s and 1960s: • the MattachineSociety(as Gay Men Minority by Harry Hay and Chuck Rowland.) • Thefirst lesbian support network, Daughters of Bilitis, by Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin.) • the 1950s and 60s, gay men and lesbians were still at risk. • American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality as an "illness" classification in 1973.
The Civil Rights Movements: Stonewall Revolt(1969) became was the biggest Lgbt movement in New York, America and it spread.
Lgbt Movements in Turkey • Homosexuality legal since 1858. • changing legal gender were never banned but legalised in 1988. • Same-sex marriage is not legal(Under debate in parliament since 2011; supported by CHP and BDP while opposed by AKP and MHP) • step adoption by same-sex couples is not legal. • Anti-discrimination laws are not still enacted. • Gay men are not allowed to donate blood because of aids bias.
Gay pride in Istanbul started with 30 people in 2003 and in 2013 the participation became more than 100.000 thanks to Gezi Park protests.
