WINDOWS 7 How Will It Affect YOU, Looking Through a New Window? Heidi Strande ITSS, Technical Trainer University of North Dakota
OS History: • Windows XP (OS) developed in 2001 • Most of us still use this OS • Windows Vista released in 2007 • Few upgraded to Vista • Enhanced security features: greater stability (helped to avoid “hanging” and “crashing”) • Enhanced features made Vista “computing-resource hungry” which slowed down all applications • The only way to make it run well was by substantially upgrading your hardware. • Vista's failure pushed Microsoft to work quickly towards another version = Windows 7
Benefits • Green Computing (The Kermit Factor): reduce power consumption; save money (7 is more energy efficient than Vista and XP) • Mobile Computing: improved battery life (laptop; 25% better); amount of activity determines new power management features to save • Laptop batteries will run longer and require less charging • Desktop machines will require less energy when being used and save you money while idle
Benefits Continued… • Windows XP Mode: virtual based environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP SP3; available for free (via download), to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. • Microsoft’s answer to corporations who are reluctant to upgrade from Windows XP (legacy applications that only work with XP) • You can run directly from your Windows 7 Desktop seamlessly, while taking advantage of all the power consumption savings and other new features the Windows 7 OS has to offer.
What’s New In Windows 7 • Aero Features = • Features that provide a rich visual experience with a glossy and transparent user interface, and dynamic visual and animation effects such as glossy window borders, live preview of taskbar icons, and a 3D view of open windows.

Aero Features • Peek (X-ray vision: peer past all your open windows straight to the Windows 7 desktop) [Located in lower, right-hand corner of the System Tray]

Additional New Features • Pinning • you can right-click any application and choose to “pin” it to the Start Menu, or the Taskbar, or both. When you “pin” a program to the Start menu it will always appear in the top-left pane of the Start menu.
Additional New Features • Libraries • Instead of having all files and folders organized under the familiar Documents folder, W7 features separate Libraries for specific content types such as contacts, documents, downloads, music, pictures, and videos [A library is used to organize folders into one collection no matter where they are originally stored on your computer.]

User Benefits: • Enormous Potential for Greater Productivity (smoother, more productive experience across the board) • Bring an open mind • Change: if you are willing to try to adapt your behavior, you will be more successful • Learning curve • You will need to invest a little effort to find the new features/stuff (if you are bound and determined to do things the way they are done in Windows XP, then stick with Windows XP) • One size does not fit all • Windows 7 will more then likely still have some annoyances, but hopefully those are fewer and less annoying than they were before
Extra Information • Photo Gallery and Movie Maker • Not included in Windows 7; however, you can download them for free • They are now a part of the “LIVE” service of Microsoft (Windows Live Essentials) • http://download.live.com • This was done because Microsoft is trying to get away from cluttering a user’s machine and making the assumption that they will use their suites.
