Childhood • Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809. • Edgar was born in Boston Massachusetts • He had two other siblings- William, his older brother- and Rosalie, his little sister.
Childhood • Edgar's mother was Eliza Arnold Hopkins Poe. • Edgar's father was David Poe.
Childhood • Edgar's father deserted the family.- He was believed to have died around December 1811 • Edgar's mother died on December 8, 1811 • Edgar went to live with the Allan family- hence his middle name. • William went to live with family in Baltimore and Rosalie went to live with the Mackenzie family.
Adulthood • Edgar had went to the University of Virginia • He was forced to withdraw from the university due to gambling debts that he could not pay off • In 1827 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, but was later discharged
Adulthood and Achievements • At around the age of 18, Edgar had wrote his first book of poetry. - "Tamerlane and Other Poems" • His creativity with his writing led to the beginning or different and or new literary genres. • He earned the nickname "Father of the Detective Story".
