Read the passage. Then, use what you read and what you already know to answer the following questions.
Kyle was so excited. He and Mom and Dad had spent all day decorating the tree and wrapping gifts. Then, they’d gone out caroling at all the neighbors’ houses. Now, they were getting ready to go to Grandmother’s house for dinner. The weather man had even said that there might be snow tomorrow! This was Kyle’s favorite time of the whole year!
What did I read in the story? Kyle is excited. His family has decorated a tree. His family has been wrapping gifts. They have gone caroling. They are going to Grandmother’s.
What do I already know? You decorate a tree at Christmas time. You wrap gifts at Christmas time. You might go caroling at Christmas time.
Based on what I read and what I already know, what conclusion can I draw about what holiday Kyle and his family are celebrating? I can conclude that Kyle and his family are celebrating Christmas.
Katie got up extra early. She looked out the window and saw nothing but snow everywhere. She and her brother raced downstairs and turned on the television to watch the news. They listened as the newscaster read the names of schools. “Yahoo!” they both screamed. “Snow day!”
What did I read in the story? Katie saw snow outside of her window. Katie and her brother went to watch the news. The newscaster was reading the names of schools. Katie & her brother are excited at the end of the story.
What do I already know? School is sometimes canceled for snow. When school is canceled, it is announced on the news. Kids are usually excited when school is canceled.
Based on what I read and what I already know, what conclusion can I draw about what Katie and her brother found out on the news? I can conclude that Katie and her brother have found out that their school is canceled for the day because of the snow.
Sarah’s family loved the holidays. They enjoyed spending time together as a family. They also enjoyed finding ways to help others who did not have as much as they had. Each year, Sarah’s family would buy gifts and food for poor families who lived in their town. They delivered the food and gifts on Christmas day.
What did I read in the story? Sarah’s family enjoys the holidays. They like to do things to help others. They like to give gifts to people who are in need.
What do I already know? People often try to help others during the Holidays. Helping people who are poor is kind and generous.
