Graduate Record Exam The Graduate Record Exam commonly known as the GRE, is a test conducted by the Educational Testing Services which is commonly used as a requirement for admission into grad school. GRE exams serves the purpose of enabling the grad school to know the competence of the applicant with regard to the knowledge he or she had earlier acquired in the previous academic level. The test may be taken in form of a paper or a computer, and the time to take the paper varies according to the test an individual decides to take. With a duration of 3 hours, the exam aims at testing the following skills: Analytical Writing With two sections that takes 45 and 30 minutes respectively, this test aims at testing your analytical and judgement skills, also being able to elaborate your views on the general topics given is the key issue in this test. The first section of this test is the analytical section where you are given a paragraph on a general topic and within 45 minutes you should be able to write what you seem to be comfortable about the topic, you should be able to present and support your argument. The second section consists of an essay where you are required to read and critique an argument in your own choice of basis, this is done in a duration of 30 minutes. The Verbal Test The purpose of this test mainly is to test your ability to understand the given concepts properly and also if you are able to connect the various given points by the author given in a situation when they are not well prioritized. For those taking computer test 30 questions are given to be answered within 30 minutes while for those taking paper test 30 minutes is given for each of the two sections with 38 questions each. The Quantitative Reasoning This is where your mathematical skills are tested. In dealing with this section you should be able to handle mathematical problems such as arithmetic, algebraic and data analysis. For those using computers 28 questions are to be answered within 30 minutes while for those using paper have to answer 2 segments consisting of 30 questions each within an allocated 30 minutes per segment.
