  3. Five Ways to Avoid Those Afternoon Naps Unmistakable • Whether it’s during break or afterschool, we “scholars” must always use our time wisely. No, napping is not using your time wisely! With the piles of homework that add up each day we must always stay alert and on our toes, or else… However, there are many, many ways to enhance our daily energy without the use of caffeine, high-sugar treats, or ANY change in your diet as a matter of fact. Try them! • 1. Rock Out Loud • Jamming to a rock song, turning the volume up, singing out loud can all help you get enough adrenaline going. Who knows? You’ll probably end up singing to yourself for the rest of the day, creating a non-stop energy boost. • 2. Wear Brighter Colors • The colors you wear reflect your mood which is then projected to the people around you. These people will respond to you with the same type of mood/attitude/energy. Be careful in what you wear. The brighter the colors are, the higher the energy is! • 3. Flirt • It’s fun, exciting, harmless (keep it innocent), and effective. Nothing quite gets the heart pumping like a little flirting. *wink, wink* • 4. Get Moving • After hours of sedentary work, exercise is the way to go. Start off slow if you want, taking it one step at a time. You’re bound to see your energy levels lifted all day. • 5. On Your Toes • Roll up on your toes and back to your heels. It’s that simple, yet it stimulates your circulatory system making you more energized and keyed up. You can do this right now! Jade eyes wrapped in hazel longing, the gaze of eternity for moments. A smile so incandescent the sun peers down in stupor. Perfume that carries spring,a cold air dare not tread behind it. She knows not these things, only the blight life can bring. By: Sean Stewart-Muniz Black And White Although her appearance screams simplicity, She sings a song of ethereal complexity. With every touch, strike, and stroke; She makes me believe in the things I cannot see, From the very first note she sings. She tells me I am great. That her keys unlock the gates that separate my own expectations and the eternal possibilities of this world. That although her song provokes a colorful passion within my soul, Her black and white ivory is the source of her real beauty. Simply because I know they’ll never change, and the feelings I foster will never dissipate. I am sure to remember that, with every note I play. By: Amairani Aleman By: JovankaRavix

  4. Untitled High School: A Retrospect Once you graduate from high school, what exactly do you want to be able to look back on? Do you want to be able to say that you were the cool kid who wore the panda hat, be known as the undiscovered artist, or the girl who always wore a smile? We all want to make a name for ourselves and be proud with what others know you as. Over the years, High School has suddenly become more about what people think of you and not what you’ve accomplished. Truth is, no one is going to remember the kid who would always study and never took risks. I know that I don’t want to have to think “Is this how I’m really going to live the rest of my life? Sheltered and naïve?” Yes, high school is about working hard, studying and making a good name for yourself, but, these are the best few years of our lives. Make it memorable. So here I leave you with the question: When you look back twenty years from now, are you going to be able to say “I can’t believe I did that” with a huge smile on your face? Looking around, Amber could see nothing but white, black and grey. The thin, black branches of the trees twisted upwards as if they were clawing at the steely sky. The last thing she could remember was talking to her friend Nora, back at the house. But now, she was lying in the snow, wondering how she’d gotten to the middle of a forest. She tried piecing memories together but the more she did, the colder she got until she realized that she was wearing nothing but sweatpants and a tank top. Her joints ached as she got up from the ground. How long had she been there? In the back of her mind, she wondered if she was dead. Dante did say that hell was freezing, she thought bitterly, as she moved forward. Each step forward made her wince as snow stuck to the soles of her feet but she had to keep moving. She looked up at the sky again. It was completely overcast; another blizzard was on its way. Fear and desperation began to seep in along with the cold. What if she never found her way back home? If she froze to death out here? It would be painless, as easy as falling asleep. She wouldn’t be able to see it coming. She was too young to die. Now she was angry, this was all her father’s fault. If he had just let her and Nora have the summer they wanted, she’d be in New York, wondering what sight to see next instead of wondering if she would die cold and alone. She opened her mouth to scream or shout but before the noise could leave her mouth, she heard someone call her name. “Hello? Is someone there?” She listened closely for a response and though it was as faint as the sound of falling snow, she heard it. Someone said her name. As she walked to where she last heard the voice, the wind began to pick up, blowing snow upwards, keeping her from seeing anything. It wasn’t long before the cold drained her. Despite how much she tried to fight the feeling of the wind cutting through her she couldn’t walk much farther. The snowflakes on her eyelashes weighed them down, tempting her with sleep. She took one last step forward, her frozen foot sank into the snow and she fell forward. Her eyes closed as the last of her warmth succumbed to the cold. By: Mary Roig Untitled What is not seen can still be heardAnd even at times sing like a birdIt may be here or even there But we get to times where we don't care Through grace and joy, in comforting peace It's like a spell that we cannot release He keeps you close when you push him away And says my child here I will stay So when your down just stop and remember That God is there for all pain to be rendered  So through doubt and fear there may be trouble But God has a plan so don't shake if it doubles He says he won't give you no more than you can bare Because your his sweet child so no need to be scared Just trust and have faith and have faith and trust some more  And just wait for the blessings that are yours to endure By: Penelope Kyna By: Anonymous

  5. Glass Cycles Cycles Water Cycle Nitrogen Cycle Carbon Cycle The Cycle of Life How history repeats itself, Just like a cycle. The most evident Our dear seasons. How autumn turns to winter, Winter turns to spring, Spring turns to summer, And summer back to autumn… again. The season signifies change and time passing. A bittersweet thing, For childhood and before compassion was of a better time And only when we have lost it, will we come to see its importance Eyes bore down on me, threatening to harm. Luckily I am protected by glass That can protect me from everything but The cold hard stare that is given to me Everything but the cold, unyielding truth. My hairs stand on end every time I face The four transparent walls that surround me. A jail that I plan to break free from All I am missing now is the courage. My legs have begun to run by their own I laugh, I cry, I jump, I’m free at last But wait, what is this tapping that I hear? Once again surrounded by four blank walls I feel myself growing very small One last chance for this final dance, I run. Autumn is of the soft breeze that passes through the fire maple trees; When orange smiling faces welcome spirits, good and ill alike, on All Hallows Eve. Winter is of the land of snow and ice, pale blue in the cold morning sun; When deers made of multitude of lights graze upon the lawn of our houses. Spring is of the shy new grasses peeping out from under the covers of melting snow; When school children await the coming summer break and graduates dreading the first day on campus. Summer is of the frequent afternoon showers that for a while makes the day tolerable; When the golden sand beaches with swaying coconut palms tree are flooded with people. Life is made up of cycles. This is my tribute to a circle. By: Anonymous By: Rouyon Lei

  7. The Lockout: Fair or Unfair Mirror With October 23 marking the 114th day of the NBA lockout, there are still settlements to reach such as revenue disputes and even if there will be a NBA season this year, and as a result, everyone is being affected from team owners to players and even the fans.  The NBA, being a mulit-billion dollar business, will have a severe blow to its revenue source because of the inability for neither the players nor the owners to reach a compromise. Since July 1, the beginning of the lockout, there has been a constant back between the owners wishing to stifle the already massive contracts the players draw in and the players bargaining for levied wages. A typical day for the owners and players trying to settle the dispute would be where they argue for countless hours and at the end of each day, nothing would be accomplished, And so the first outcome of this not being resolved was that David Stern, NBA Commissioner canceled both the preseason and first two week regular season games. If the lockout continues, Stern stresses that more weeks would be postponed indefinitely.  As the impasse reached critical mass, a federal mediator was called in to take action and help settle the dispute. Of course as this is still taking place, a proposal was put on the table where the owners would do a 50/50 split with the players; however, the latter declined the offer, thus returning them to the same position they were originally in.  As a result, if there isn’t a resolution, the company will lose hundreds of millions each month and a cumulative loss of four billion dollars. This would greatly affect the owners as they would not earn anything as well as the players who will lose both money and valuable playtime. In addition to the players being inactive, many have said that they will take their talents overseas. Hopefully we fans are able to see at least some NBA action this upcoming season. Starring at my past, I see stricken grief and its determined face not willing to retreat That little two – ponytailed wearing girl became swallowed up in this world. I was there, face pained with fear. It wasn’t me, but no one knows how badly it should’ve been me. If only you would’ve come back to me, maybe, just maybe my present wouldn’t be so bleak. Before my eyes begin to tear, I hold them back hoping they don’t near. -BLINK, BLINK- Opening my eyes… I see me, the present me, who pretends that I’m happy all of the time, (humph) lord knows I want to be. Whose stopping me, you may ask? ME, I can’t seem to break free from the “PERFECT” reins that have been set for me. Just for the spectators and down graders to let me be who I want to be. Hopefully when I blink again my future can tell me who I’m destined to be… -BLINK, BLINK- Wait. This can’t be. I’m still me. I’m confused, puzzled, a bit shaken up. Then it dawns on me, my future depends on me. I smile, a true smile for I will no longer allow my past to define me, and I will not sulk in my present wasting time, But I WILL embrace my future NOT allowing it to destroy me! 8. Untitled Untitled She stood in the middle of the street, feeling night infest her bones. Finally, they had come back. The days had passed by with no purpose. Every morning, her mother woke her up with a gentle rap, startling her from her dreams. Each day at school crawled with cruel slothfulness only to immerse into a night where emptiness takes over. Each night she would wait. Desperately, she would strain her senses to tell her anything, something about those she had remained for. Finally, they had come back. She had made the door close without a sound. Barefooted toes quietly crossed across the yard, instinct leading her to the place that had called her. Her body was straining with excitement to get close to the empty lot across the street. There it was! A flicker of heat had greeted her; foreign music was sinking into her body. Dark spirits danced around the fire, uncivilized noises thrown out of their mouths, limbs flailing gracefully and purposefully. They were beautiful. Uncertainly, she had walked closer and closer still. The dance never halted, their faces never faltered. One foot into the ring, one hip quivered with want. The fire reflected off her eyes, the music echoing off her skin. A hand grabbed hers, and she was gone. The first sound was ripped from her throat. Her first steps were clumsy. The hands held her up, helping her move with them. Left, forward, right, back, left, forward, right, back, over and over again. When the rain began to fall, the first howl was from her. It was everywhere, soaking itself into her skin, into her bones, into her heart. She let her eyes close. From behind her lids, figures flowed across, whirring and blurring. The music reached a deafening pitch, the fire an unbearable heat, her heart a subterranean lightness. Then it all stopped. When she opened her eyes, she could remember nothing from before. The only thing to remain was the swaying from the dancing, the ringing from the music, the burns from the fire. Hundreds of hands touched everywhere, pulling her close. They welcomed her. She belonged to them now. Wishing to find peaceAmidst a hectic school life,I search for solace.Where I will end upDoes not make a differenceIf I am content.Sifting through options,Needing a place for comfort,I am at a loss.First is Building Four -Too easily it becomesLoud and so crowded. I can't hear myselfThink, and I know this isNot the place for me. I walk to the Lake,With the hopes that myJourney may come to an end. But to no avail,I realize it is tooHot to meditate. My free time is up,And now I must head to class. My mission has failed. Now I know that thereIs no place for me to be.It cannot be done.I have a breakthrough -There's not necessarilyA "me" spot close by,But I have my mind. Here, I can go anywhereOr do anything. That is all I need. 9. Monetary policy, however cannot directly lower inflation rates which is why the Federal Reserve must use monetary policy targets such as money supply and interest rates which in turn affect real GDP, employment, and the price level. In an inflationary economy, the Federal Reserve can then raise the Prime Interest Rate, which causes banks to be less inclined to borrow money from the government to lend out to borrowers. Higher interest rates shape aggregate demand by affecting consumption, investment, and net exports. Consumers would have to decrease their spending on durables, while firms would have to invest less due to higher interest rates on corporate bonds making it more expensive to borrow, all of which address inflation. However, unemployment is the major trade-off that results from a lower inflation rate; a balanced economy is therefore essential to avoid staggering inflation or crushing unemployment, which are interdependent of one another. Keynesian economics assumes that one of that main causes of lingering unemployment is the labor market whose wages are ”sticky downwards”. Due to a sticky wage rate, a reduction of demand of labor in a recession results in an increase in involuntary unemployment. To boost aggregate demand, the Federal Reserve thus implements an expansionary monetary policy which consists of increasing the money supply and decreasing the interest rates to increase real GDP. This will cause employment to be much closer to the level of output and in turn increases consumption, investment, and net exports. The multiplier effect illustrates that any government expenditures bring about cycles of spending that increase employment and prosperity regardless of the form of spending. It states that when one of the components of aggregate demand is changed, the final impact on aggregate demand will be greater than the initial impact on that component. Therefore, increasing one component of aggregate demand will affect all its other components; for instance, if a government decides to give a 10 billion play rise to doctors in the healthcare system, that money would reverberate around the economy. Doctors would raise their consumption as well as their demand in goods and services due to a higher income effect. With consumption rising, demand in workers would rise creating more jobs in the labor market thus lowering the unemployment rate. Keynesian economics therefore implements fiscal and monetary policies to solve recession, inflation, and lower the unemployment rate. Theories such as the multiplier effect illustrate how the economy can be compared to a domino effect. If government spending increases, so will consumption, investment and net exports. However, Keynes claims it is difficult to calculate the speed at which this process occurs which makes it problematic to finesse the aggregate demand. Keynesian economics is currently known as the foundation of modern macroeconomics because it challenged the consensus that an economy naturally restores itself to full employment after a period of downturn. However, in all different schools of economics, whether it is Keynesian, Classical, or Monetarist, the economic policies (fiscal, monetary, exchange rate policies etc.) all attempt to achieve the 4 macroeconomic goals, which are economic growth (to raise GDP level), low price inflation, low unemployment, and low trade deficits. Evolution I Am From What role does evolution and natural selection play in our life? Despite many of you may think humans cannot evolve anymore, this statement should be taken into consideration. In fact, hundreds of our genes show evidence of genetic and physical change. But why do we still evolving and how does the future humans will to look like? According to Charles Darwin, humans evolve through natural selection: the organism with the best genes survives and produces more offspring. This theory can also apply to our society. For example, we are the only specie that doesn't become lactose intolerant as we grow up. This is possible due to the domestication of cattle in Europe centuries ago; our ancestors developed traits that now allow our immune systems tolerate lactose as we become older. In addition is the sickle hemoglobin gene, which is found people who live in certain areas where malaria is endemic. This aids people with the immunity towards Malaria, although, they can get infected with malaria, this mutation make them less likely to die from this disease. This change probably occurred as consequence of the constant exposure to malaria. But the question that keeps floating in scientists' brains iswhere is Human Evolution heading? We started as hominids, monkey like creatures with a low intellectual level and ended as homo sapiens. Does this mean that we are going to keep changing or we are just going to state the way we are? Until recently, most scientists agreed that human evolution had slowed down but last December Hawks ( a scientists organization) reported that it has actually accelerated. This was supported by an experiment in which Hawks compared chunks of DNA among 269 people from around the world.Hawks concluded that recent genetic changes account for about 7 percent of the human genome. This is probably due to the growth of the population and the rise of new diseases which lead to genetic changes. For instance, the rise of autism increases the chances of genetic alterations. With these new researches and studies in mind, scientists have hypothesized that humans will reach a point in their evolution in which The human race will one day split into two separate species, an attractive, intelligent ruling elite and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures. The hypothesis is based on theorist Oliver Curry from the London School of Economics, who says that after they reach their peak around the year 3000 humans will begin to regress. According to Curry's ideas, men will have symmetrical facial features, deeper voices and bigger penises, according to Curry in a report commissioned for men's satellite TV channel Bravo. In contrast, women will all have glossy hair, smooth hairless skin, large eyes and pert breasts. Although the consideration of alternative actions and the selection of the most appropriate, the issue of evolution still unknown for our society and most of the ideas are not scientifically proven. However, we can correctly say that evolution still taking place in humans. I am from IPod, From Apple, And the fruit tree of technology. U.S.: Then & Now It wasn’t usual for a 16 years old girl to have and drive a car back then, but now more than usual it is a necessity for most teens to drive one because of the way they live, a car is needed to go to school, work, and everywhere else. What did you do for fun? “I read books and watched television, my parents didn’t let me go out with friends or go to the movies or to the parties or night clubs, so I had no choice, but yes there were a lot of cool places and clubs to go and hang out”, she expressed. Teenagers have more freedom today and hang out with friends, go to the beach, go to some night cubs, and play sports for fun. Anybody could say it is nice to be a teenager today What was your family situation at that time; were you married? “I was just a young girl and lived with my family in a really big old house in New Jersey. The house had two floors and a basement. We always had dinner together after everyone was home. Both of my parents worked in factories and they both made decisions about the family together, it was a really big deal to have a house and a good reputation and a respectable family back then just as it is now”, she said. Today as people have a more open-minded thinking, some are already married and have kids by the age of 16, while others don’t even think about marriage around that age; they just don’t want such a big responsibility on them now. Some of those who still live with their parent(s) have divorced parents; this has become a common situation today in the U.S. Were you employed back then? Going to school? What took up your time? “I wasn’t working yet but I went to a public school called Battin Senior High. All I did was go to school and think about what I was going to do and become, I took my time to read and to be with my family, there was nothing else I could do”, she said. Most teens today go to school and also have a job to help their families and to support themselves. Also, studying, hanging out with friends, having fun, and spending time with a girlfriend or a boyfriend takes up teens’ time. What were your thoughts on the president and U.S. Politics at that time? “I was not worried about politics at that time or who the president was or what he did, it was not of my concern, but have I wanted to know about it, and my father wouldn’t let me get involved anyway”, she replied. Just like today, teenagers didn’t even have the right to vote so why would they be interested? , there is no reason why so the majority doesn’t care about politics or the president. Do you think American Life has improved or not? Why? “I think time is a big factor and after watching over 40 years of changes and evolution of this country I can tell there has been a real improvement in American life. Now technology is a big deal for us and our lives depend on it but it has also helped our country against terrorism, robbery, fraud, etc… I feel proud of the America we’ve created” she said. Looking, comparing, and contrasting these aspects of society such as thoughts, actions, and habits of people can easily see the improvement of American life. Technological advances, political improvements, people’s actions and expressions, and the brain and creations of people like Bill Gates (author and chairman of Microsoft), Henry Ford (founder of the Ford Motor Company, and sponsor of the development of the assembly line technique of mass production), and Martin Cooper (developed the handheld (cellphone) mobile phone) have helped to the improvement and development of the America existing today as a world economical, political, and technological power. What is evolution of a country? What causes it? When does it really occur? How does it happen? A series or sequence of changes and progressive actions leading to the enhancement of a country’s government and the way of life of its people can be described as its evolution. It usually happens over time, after years and years of the development of the different aspects of society. In order to visualize and have a better understanding of the evolutional progress of The United States over the last 40 years it is necessary to know how life was back then during the 1970’s and how different people thought back then from now. What was life like back in the 1970’s for a 16 year-old person? “It was very awkward, I was living in a new country, I had no friends, and my high school was an all-girls high school and I had to get used to it. I didn’t know a word of English and all my teachers were North Americans; that was really frustrating. I had to walk from home to school. The food, the milk, and everything tasted way different from what I was used back then. I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere; I could only go out if I did so with my cousins. All I knew was that I was here to stay and I wasn’t going back to my country. I had to adapt to this new country and culture; that was all I could think about. On the other side, as a teenager, all I did was to study as much as I could and although I can’t remember much I can tell that fashion was very different from now, people used to wear more colors. Technology was not the center of attention for teens at the time, reading was. For me life was like a door I had “open” to create a really good future for me and my family”, Mrs. Nicole Jorge answered. For most teenagers in 2011 life is just to have the best phone or laptop or car and show it to everybody. Clothing is a really important part of their lives just as technology is as well. Others think more about their futures and take it seriously, knowing that what they are building today is what they are going to have tomorrow. What was the biggest thought on your mind back then? “I didn’t care much about having fun or hanging out with friends, I just wanted to learn the language and have a successful life in this country”, she said. This is the thinking of an immigrant person which compared to those of people who were born in the U.S. is mostly the same since everyone wishes to have a successful life. Today, however, there are more opportunities to everyone who really wants to do it. What were you looking forward to the most? Did you have any big goals? “I wanted to go to university and have a career but I was undecided on what I wanted to study, and on top of that I didn’t have anyone to help or orientate me on that topic”, she states. Forty years later, in the 2010’s, people think almost the same way; the only difference is that now there is more variety to choose from and more people to help you make a good decision. What was your greatest fear or worry at that time? “I had no fears and no worries, I knew what I wanted”, she firmly answered. Today most teens are scared of real life, of getting a job, of not having money to pay for their tuitions, etc… It has never been easy but now the government and even private banks are willing to help everyone who needs it. How did you get around? Did you own a car? “No, I walked to and from school”, she replied. By: Alexis Monterrey
