Georgia HIE Network FAQs What is a Health Information Exchange? • Technology, business, and policy infrastructure that enables clinical information to move electronically among disparate health information systems • Allowsauthorized providers and users to securely query for and receive patient health information. • Presents a more complete view of the patient – ensuring proper delivery of the right data to the right place at the right time. 2

Georgia HIE Network FAQs How will it work? • The Georgia statewide HIE is a network of networks model • Connecting several healthcare organizations and providers • Health-related state agencies, SAHIEs, hospitals, clinics, physician practices, long-term care facilities, payers, labs, pharmacies, telehealth and many more • Enabling real-time exchange of patient health information from one treating provider to another • Clinicians can query the exchange to find their patient’s health information • Reports can be automatically pushed from one provider site to another (lab results and radiology report delivery) • Is not a central repository of clinical data – information remains with the treating provider and only flows when there is authorization. • The Georgia HIE network is also the distribution mechanism for future products and services 5

Georgia HIE Network Georgia HIE Network Products and Services 6.29.12 Pilot Launched 11.8.12 Open to all Georgia Providers • First product offered by the Georgia HIE network • A free and easy-to-use service using secure messaging enables authorized providers to securely transmit patient health data to another authorized clinician • Replaces slower, less secure and less reliable forms of patient data exchange such as fax, unsecure email, and phone • Does not replace more robust query-based health information exchange 8
