Identifying Essential Standards • Marzano calculated that it would take 23 years to teach all of the K-12 standards. • In California, there are 226 core standards in 7th grade. There are 339 if you count PE and VAPA! In High school, there are an average of 212 standards in core plus PE. • It is impossible to teach that many standards well and support those who don’t learn it the first time. • Essential standards or must be identified in order to spend extra time on what is most important and de-emphasize others.
What makes a standard “Essential”? • An Essential Standard must be such that it will be important to students for years to come in life and in academics. Endurance

What makes a standard “Essential”? 3) An Essential Standard must be such that it prepares students for the next level of study in this class or in future classes. Readiness

Essential or Not? On the handout entitled “Essential or Not?”, answer the following questions about the standards with which you most closely identify: • Are both standards important? • Do both standards have “Endurance”? • Do both standards have “Leverage”? • Do both standards have “Readiness”? • Which standard is an Essential Standard?
How to use Essential Standards Essential Standards are the crux of collaboration. - Essential Standards are used to create a flexible pacing guide. - Collaboration time is used to discuss how to teach the Essential Standards effectively. - Common formative assessments are written to determine proficiency on the Essential Standards. - The data from the common assessments and student work are analyzed. - Interventions are used to bring all students to proficiency on Essential Standards. - Summative assessments are given to assess the effectiveness of the strategies and interventions.
