  1. Inserting and Maintaining Files Inserting & Maintaining Files

  2. Inserting Items into AutoCAD • Many items and types of files can be inserted into AutoCAD. • Some of the files can be used to model in 2D or 3D. • To insert an item into AutoCAD, use the Insert menu or the INSERT command. Inserting & Maintaining Files

  3. Inserting Items into AutoCAD • The items that can be inserted into AutoCAD include: • Images • Windows metafiles • ACIS files • 3D Studio files • OLE objects Inserting & Maintaining Files

  4. The IMAGE Command Entry methods: • Reference or Insert toolbar: • Insert menu: Image Manager • Command line: IMAGE • The image can be any one of the following formats: • Raster image • Bitmap • TIFF • RLE • JPG • PCX • TGA Inserting & Maintaining Files

  5. The IMAGE Command Inserting & Maintaining Files

  6. The IMPORT Command • The IMPORT command imports a Windows metafile, an ACIS file, or a 3DS file into an AutoCAD drawing. Entry methods: • Insert toolbar: • Insert menu: Windows Metafile, ACIS File, or 3D Studio • Command line: IMPORT Inserting & Maintaining Files

  7. The IMPORT Command Inserting & Maintaining Files

  8. Inserting OLE Objects • The INSERTOBJ command inserts objects from applications that support object linking and embedding (OLE). • Object linking allows the object to keep a connection to the source file. Entry methods: • Insert toolbar: • Insert menu: OLE Object • Command line: INSERTOBJ Inserting & Maintaining Files

  9. Inserting OLE Objects Inserting & Maintaining Files

  10. File Maintenance • Occasionally, drawing files require maintenance. • File maintenance is an important part of maintaining your information. • For large or complicated AutoCAD files, you may need to do some file maintenance to keep the files in usable condition. Inserting & Maintaining Files

  11. File Maintenance • Several types of file maintenance can be done: • Auditing files for problems • Recovering files that have minor damage • Purging files of unneeded objects • Recovering from total file corruption Inserting & Maintaining Files

  12. Purging Files • Files accumulate unused objects and data that need to be purged occasionally. Entry methods: • File menu: Drawing Utilities > Purge… • Command line: PURGE Inserting & Maintaining Files

  13. Purging Files • You can purge: • Blocks • Dimension styles • Layers • Linetypes • Mline styles • Plot styles • Shapes • Table styles • Text styles Inserting & Maintaining Files

  14. Auditing Files • The AUDIT command examines the current drawing and corrects any errors it finds in the file structure. Entry methods: • File menu: Drawing Utilities > Audit • Command line: AUDIT Command: audit Fix any errors detected? [Yes/No] <N>: y 1 Blocks audited Pass 1 2 objects audited Pass 2 2 objects audited Inserting & Maintaining Files

  15. Recovering Files • The RECOVER command repairs a drawing as you open the drawing file. • RECOVER is often successful when the AUDIT command cannot fix the problem. Entry methods: • File menu: Drawing Utilities > Recover… • Command line: RECOVER Inserting & Maintaining Files

  16. Wrap-Up • Many different types of files can be inserted into AutoCAD, including images and other CAD data. • OLE objects can be inserted from applications that support object linking and embedding (OLE). • File maintenance allows you maintain your drawing files. • The PURGE command eliminates unneeded data and objects. Inserting & Maintaining Files

  17. Wrap-Up (continued) • The AUDIT command allows you to verify and sometimes fix errors in drawing files. • The RECOVER file can often open and repair files that are damaged so badly that AUDIT cannot repair them. Inserting & Maintaining Files

  18. Reflection Why might you need to insert different file types into drawing files? Inserting & Maintaining Files

  19. Reflection (continued) Answer: There are many different reasons why you might need to insert other file types, including logos for the title block and other picture files. Inserting & Maintaining Files

  20. Reflection (continued) Why might OLE objects be useful? Inserting & Maintaining Files

  21. Reflection (continued) Answer: OLE objects can be updated and linked to the original file, which makes changes easier to handle. Inserting & Maintaining Files

  22. Reflection (continued) Why is it important to maintain your drawing files? Inserting & Maintaining Files

  23. Reflection (continued) Answer: Drawing files can become cluttered, taking up excess storage space. They need to be kept in check so they do not get corrupted. Inserting & Maintaining Files
