  6. The Manhattan Project • Group created in 1939 • Nuclear experiments based on Einstein’s letter to Roosevelt - Roosevelt wanted the bomb - afraid Germany would develop it • 3 bombs were built

The Manhattan Project • On July 16, 1945, the gadget of the Trinity Test was detonated in New Mexico and the world entered the nuclear age. • The bomb was made primarily of plutonium-238, a synthetic element. • The U.S. had two other atomic bombs and began to make plans to use them against Japan.
