  6. BENCH LEVELS General: Surveys for the Department must conform to the accuracy required by the Board of Professional Surveyors and Mappers rule chapter 61G17-6.003. In order to consistently obtain the required accuracy exacting equipment and methods must be used.

  7. BENCH LEVELS It has been said that a road is built with a level. The bench line is the vertical control for all subsequent work, both for Location and Construction, on the project. For this reason no other facet of a Location Survey is more important.

  8. BENCH LEVELS Definitions: • LEVELING: Operation used for obtaining the measurement of difference in elevation.

  9. BENCH LEVELS • DIFFERENCE IN ELEVATION: Vertical distance between two points. Definitions:

  10. BENCH LEVELS Definitions: • BACKSIGHT: Sight taken with the level to point of known elevation (often called a plus (+) ).

  11. BENCH LEVELS Definitions: • FORESIGHT: Sight taken with level to a point, elevation of which is to be determined (often called a minus (-) ).

  12. BENCH LEVELS Definitions: • HEIGHT OF INSTRUMENT (HI) : The sum of the known elevation at the point of backsight and the reading taken on the backsight.

  13. BENCH LEVELS Definitions: • TURNING POINT: Solid fixed point used temporarily in leveling where rod is held first for foresight, then for backsight.

  14. BENCH LEVELS Definitions: • BENCH MARK: Fixed solid reference point or object. Permanent as possible in character.
