REQUIRED STUDENT MATERIALS • Office Machines, With Excel Applications, 6th Edition, by McKenzie and Hughes, Prentice Hall Publishers. 2003.
OBJECTIVES At the end of the course, the student will: • Demonstrate the fundamental arithmetical operations of the 10-key electronic printing calculator and relate these operations to the solving of common business problems. • Use the touch system of fingering for rapid machine operations. • Use the machine for all aspects of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division including mixed decimals, fractions, and percentages. • Apply the above knowledge to common business forms and procedures. • Develop sufficient speed and accuracy on the machine to become occupationally competent. • Develop standard equipment operational procedures that can be transferred to other types of business machines.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES • Operate a 10-key electronic printing calculator and relate these operations to solving common business problems found in accounting, finance, and banking organizations. • Demonstrate the touch system of fingering for efficient machine operation while developing speed and accuracy.
LESSON PROCEDURES The early lessons will introduce the keyboard and explain how to solve problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The lessons will involve business applications and will include activities such as payroll, merchandising, invoices, and insurance premiums. Before beginning on your machine: • Read the "Preface" in your textbook. • Use the TOUCH METHOD of operating the machine; that is, use your index finger to depress the 1, 4, and 7 keys; your middle finger for the 2, 5, and 8 keys; your ring finger for the 3, 6, 9, and decimal key; your thumb for the zero key; and your little finger for the plus, minus, nonadd/date, subtotal and total keys.
There are two main advantages to using the touch system • You will avoid headaches from shifting your eyes back and forth from your paper to your machine. • You will be more accurate by staying focused on the numbers.
It is extremely important that all problems be done by touch and not by watching your fingers. This is because ACCURACY is your most important goal. It will seem to go slowly at first; but until you can do the problems without looking at your fingers, there is no point in doing the problems quickly if you get the wrong answer. Once you become accurate, your speed will increase. • To achieve both speed and accuracy, keep your eyes on your copy. Be sure to sit up straight, but not rigid. • Read the figures from your copy, but do not whisper the numbers while you do it. Before beginning any problem press the total key (*) two times. (this clears the memory completely) • Always use the correct finger on the correct key. If you get into the habit of using incorrect fingering, you will cost yourself time and accuracy. • If your machine does not seem to be working correctly, please ask a staff member for assistance. • ALWAYS feel free to ask the instructor or instructional assistant for help or to get any questions answered on material you don't understand. • Check your problems (daily work) with the key located at the front desk. Tear or cut out and turn in answer sheets (outside tab on each page). • If you are not checking the paper tape against the book, please leave the calculator in the “display only” mode. If you are using the paper tape, please wind up tape into a neat roll before throwing it in the wastebasket.
TEST INSTRUCTIONS • Tests are available at the front staff desk. They must be signed out to you and date stamped. If you use your machine tape, the tape is handed in with your test sheet for tests 1, 2, 3, & 4. • These tests are closed-book tests so make sure all books and paper are on the floor. • Be sure you have enough time to finish the test once you have checked it out. It cannot be turned in and finished another time/day. • Be sure to set the decimal indicator appropriately and to follow all other directions given on the test. • Be sure to set the rounding feature to set on 5/4. • Be sure your writing is neat and readable. • Hand the test and the paper tape from the calculator to a staff person; make sure they check-in your test on the testing log.
EVALUATION Evaluation of ability to meet the course objectives will be as follows: • Completion of all daily assignments. • Completion of all exams.
GRADING STANDARDS Test 1, 2, 3, & 4 are worth 100 points each. Woodside Apartments, Practice Set is worth 400 points (tests 5, 6, 7, & 8 are each worth 100 points.) There are 800 points possible and the course grade will be determined by the following scale: A = 90-100% B = 80- 89% C = 70- 79% D = 60- 69%
LESSON INSTRUCTIONS REMEMBER: Doing problems ACCURATELY—BY TOUCH—is the most important goal of this class. Lesson 1, pp. 2-22. Do all problems using pencil and paper. Lesson 2, pp. 23-32. Do all problems using the printing calculator. LESSON 2 NOTES: Remember to clear the machine before each problem by pressing the total (*) key. Your tape should read 0.*. On pp. 26- 28: For Add-Mode problems to appear as examples do in book, put decimal set on "F" Float. On p. 29: Use the Add-Mode decimal setting, and your tape will look like the examples in the book. Lesson 3, pp. 33-40. Do all problems. Accuracy is most important; do not worry about timing yourself. TEST 1--SKILL CHECKUP, TOUCH METHOD (100 points) TEST 1 NOTES: On TEST 1, be prepared to figure decimal equivalents without the use of a chart. (Refer to page 13 of your text.) Lesson 4, pp. 44-85. All problems. Lesson 5, pp. 86-114. All problems. TEST 2--ADDITION, SUBTRACTION and MULTIPLICATION (100 points) Lesson 6, pp. 115-145. All problems. Lesson 7, pp. 146-175. All problems. TEST 3--DIVISION and MULTIPLE OPERATIONS (100 points) Lesson 8, pp. 178-213. Developing Keyboarding and Critical Thinking Skills. TEST 4--BUSINESS APPLICATIONS (100 points)
Woodside Apartments Practice Set This represents a chance to apply the skills you learned doing the problems throughout the book. You will need to read instructions thoroughly and work carefully. The staff can not help you with this section. If you have questions, go back in your book to review the section. Read Woodside Apartments Introduction on pages 214-215. Complete Job 1 and Job 2. Day One--Follow instructions in book. Complete ALL forms. DAY ONE NOTE: The balance forwarded on check #431 is $8,576.00. TEST 5--DAY ONE (100 points) Day Two--Follow instructions in book. Complete ALL forms. TEST 6--DAY TWO (100 points) Day Three--Follow instructions in book. Complete ALL forms. TEST 7--DAY THREE (100 points) Day Four--Follow instructions in book.
