Sustain
The 5S housekeeping program 5S is a set of techniques providing a standard approach to housekeeping with Lean or Just-in-time manufacturing. The Japanese concept originated, as did most of the elements of JIT, within Toyota. The cornerstone of 5S is that untidy, cluttered work areas are not productive.
The elements of the 5S are all Japanese word beginning with the letter S.
Sort-Achieve the best physical organization of the workplace. The plant must take a critical look at the area by a cross-functional committee. Time spent searching for materials is considered waste. Safety issues occur when people fall over things. Clutter makes it hard to move around. “ a place for everything and everything in its place”
Set in order – This refers to orderliness in the workplace and the method of writing, printing, and delivering a newspaper. This also means a standard way of doing things within the plant.
Shine – Anglicised as cleanliness. The principle here is that employees will be happier and hence, more productive in a clean bright environment. The safety related issues are the use of the 5S system to avoid slipping in a puddle of oil, dust or metal shavings blown into someone’s eye. Shine’s concept is to be established as an ongoing concept.
Develop assignment map which identifies who is responsible for which area.
Establish a schedule which says who does what at which times and on which days.
Standardization- Best described as standardized clean-up. A means to maintain the first three concepts of sort, set and shine.
Sustain- The final stage is that of discipline. 5 minutes of every four hours must be dedicated to shine or cleaning.5S is a set of techniques providing a standard approach to housekeeping with Lean or Just-in-time manufacturing.
