Spanish I Expected Student Results: • Student will be able to: • Use short sentences, learned words and phrases, and simple questions and commands when speaking or writing on the following themes: self, friends, family, school, celebrations, and extracurricular activities. • Understand some ideas and familiar details presented in clear, uncomplicated speech when listening. • Understand short texts enhanced by visual clues when reading. • Students will be asked to not only recognize vocabulary but produce language and produce it correctly whether it be written or verbally.
Spanish II Expected Student Results: • Student will be able to: • use and understand learned expressions, sentences, and strings of sentences, questions, and polite commands when speaking and listening. • understand important ideas and some details in highly contextualized authentic texts when reading. • create simple paragraphs when writing. • communicate on topics such as school, friends, celebrations, places, and childhood.
Classroom Materials: • Textbook: • Realidades 1 or Realidades II • Writing, Audio and Video Workbook: • Realidades I or Realidades II (Can purchase through Amazon.com or publisher) • Notebook Recommendation: • Spiral notebook or section for Spanish only • RED pen and highlighter • Classroom Syllabus: • Should have been returned by 9/24 (5 pts) • Students will lose 2 participation points per day that materials are not brought to class. If participation grade is low it may be because appropriate materials are not being brought to class.
Grading: • 30% Tests • 10% Vocabulary Quizzes • 10% Grammar Quizzes • 20% Projects/Writing Assessment • 15% Homework Assessment • 15% Classroom Participation
Homework Assessment: • Homework is assigned daily--check School Loop • A five-point homework quiz is given daily • Quizzes will be corrected in class • No make-ups are given • Students will be allowed to drop the lowest homework quiz score
Participation: • Students need to earn five points participation each week. • Exceptions will be made for short weeks. • Students earn points by raising their hand and being called on. It doesn’t matter if the answer is incorrect, the student earns a point for participating. • If a student has an excused absence, participation points can be made up during tutorial.
Projects: • Projects are an opportunity for students to “show off” their Spanish skills. Most projects will be presented to the class and posted on the walls. Late projects will be accepted for full credit with an excused absence. For each day a project is late (for any reason other than an excused absence), the grade will be lowered by 10%. A project turned in three (3) or more days late will receive no more than 50%.
Tests/Quizzes: • Tests and quizzes will be given approximately every 2 weeks. Tests will be graded by teacher and reviewed during class or tutorial. • Students need to make up any missed tests or quizzes before the following chapter test. • Five participation points will be given for completing quiz corrections. • These will be done during class or tutorial. If a student is absent the day of the quiz corrections, they need to make up during tutorial.

Foreign Language Requirements • Foreign Language is NOT a graduation requirement. • Two years of a foreign language are required for UC/CSU (3 years preferred) • The same foreign language must be taken throughout the two years.

Study Tips: • Use what you know • Use knowledge of English to help with new vocabulary and grammar • You don’t need to understand everything • Make flashcards • Word/picture or word/word • Participate in class • Complete all assignments on time • AND study vocabulary daily (5 to 10 minutes)
