  1. “Texting with C and O”

  2. The Most Tragic Scavenger Hunt EVER!

  3. Major Themes in “Oedipus the King”

  4. Themes and Motifs • Light and darkness • Sight and blindness (also denial!) • Arrogance and Hubris (King vs the people) • Fate and freewill (fate being controlled by the Gods, freewill being in control of one’s own choices- thus the crossroads) • Plague and Health (note: “Miasma” and Moral health, Ares) • Prophecy, Oracles, Predestination

  5. Miasma • An oppressive or unpleasant atmosphere that surrounds or emanates from something …

  6. When researching themes/motifs: • We examine word choice (diction) • We carefully understand the chorus (insight into Sophocles’ beliefs?) • We consider the BIG picture of theatre • We keep our ancient audience in mind: • Believed in and feared the Gods • Suffered from blight, plague, war, and storms • Had multiple formations of government: Democracy, Monarchy (Oedipus the King), Oligarchy and Tyranny. • Were politically motivated and involved

  7. Theme posters must have: • A clear title • 4-6 excellent quotes (Sophocles 341-344) • Images and art to support your themes • A thesis paragraph (4-6 sentences) that answers: How and to what effect does the theme of ______________ emerge in the play? What insight and/or political commentary might Sophocles be providing to his audiences?

  8. HW: COMPLETE THE PLAY!!!

  9. Your fate has already been determined by a higher power. • Children should be loyal to their parents no matter what the cost. • You have complete control over your own life because you have free will over your own actions. • If knowing the truth leads to pain, then it’s better not knowing it. • You cannot be blamed for something you did in ignorance. • The past will always come back to haunt. • It is better to keep a dark secret to yourself than to expose the ugly truth. • Sometimes living with the guilt and knowledge of what you’ve done wrong is worth than death. • All types of pride are wrong. • The history and actions of your family determine your fate and success in life.
