Welcome to our Curriculum Meeting Years 1 and 2
Overview of the meeting • Organisation of Emerald Class • Lesson structure – Autumn Term • How it is different from EYFS • Reading, Writing and Spelling • Mathematics • Ways to support your child at home.
Organisation of Class In Year 1/2 we have Teaching Assistants everyday: Mrs Hailwood works every morning and two afternoons Mrs Hailwood also teaches Emerald Class on Tuesday afternoons Mrs Hodson is with us on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons doing group work Mrs Halcett listens to readers everyday and support is vital in children making progress with their reading.
Structure of the Day • Morning activity as soon as they children come in – for autumn term this is developing their fine motor and handwriting skills. • Guided Reading • Maths • Break • Phonics/ Handwriting • Literacy • Lunch • Foundation subjects are covered within the afternoon sessions.
Guided Reading • All children are in a guided reading group. The groups will change as children move book band levels at various points throughout the year. In guided reading children will read with Teacher and TA once a week and complete tasks linked to their reading. Phonics • The children are divided into groups for phonics. These sessions take place every day except Thursdays with either Mrs Hailwood and myself. Children take part in practical and written activities. Spellings • Children will be given a number of spellings based on the phonics phase they are working on. These will be tested weekly. Children learn in different ways, practising spellings can be made fun and practical or can be learnt using more traditional methods such as look, write, check. Finding a way which suits you and your child is vital in the children’s ability to learn their spellings.
Times tables Children will have weekly tables to learn. Year 1 need to know the 2,5 and 10 times tables confidently by the end of the year. Year 2 need to know 2, 3, 4,5 and 10 times tables, however we may move on to others. Year 1 timetable tests will only start in Spring 1. Year 2 will start next week. Targets Children have targets in Reading, Maths and Literacy, they are shared with children and sent home so you can see what they are working on. Once children have achieved their target, new ones will be set. Target folders are being sent home next week for you to see what you child is focusing on.
Autumn Term - How is it Different • Year 1 is a much more formal learning style compared to Reception. • Learning though play will slowly be phased out by December for most children. • The National Curriculum is the main framework of learning. The National Curriculum is the statutory framework for all KS1, KS2 and KS3 children. It begins in Year 1 for the children who are ready. The National Curriculum sets out the subjects taught and the coverage for the year. We cover Key Stage One over a two year cycle with exciting topics to engage children. • Learning is structured through Core and Foundation subjects which differ from the Areas of EYFS.
Within the Year 1/2 classroom you will see children participating in a variety of independent and focused/teacher led activities. • For Year 1 English and Maths will be ‘eased’ into the timetable to allow children to adjust to more formal learning. This enables myself and TA’s to work 1:1 or in small groups with your children on a rotation basis whilst some access continuous provision. • Children also undertake the foundation subjects including Computing, PE, History and Geography and Art & Design from the offset.
Reading • All children to bring book bags in every day. • Mrs Halcett comes in every day and listens to the children read at least twice a week. Books are changed when needed. Please try and read a little each night with your child, there is no rush to finish their books. Children love stories and some of their reading time can be stories you read with them and to them.
Handwriting • All children are moving to cursive handwriting, we have seen a huge improvement already this term. • It is important they know where to start and end letters. • We use an interactive PP to support teaching • The mat supports you at home in supporting your child forming all letters correctly. • We have adopted the approach that all writing is best writing and encourage you to expect the same at home.
Watch the pencil. MENU Click on the pencil to see it write.
Phonics Screening • This will be undertaken by ALL Year 1 children nationally with a few exceptions. It tests children’s reading ability to segment and blend words into spoken units of sound. • Tests are carried out mid-June. • Children will need to be able to sound out each word and read it correctly. • Pass mark is unknown until after the closing date. • You will be informed in more detail nearer the date.
Year 2 Sats • Up to now SATS will still go ahead next year for Year 2 They will be completed in the month of May. They will consist of two maths papers and two reading papers. We will not know scores until the Scaled Score Conversion is released in June. More information in Spring.
Literacy • Literacy lessons include: vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar, handwriting. • We teach different genres from story writing, poetry, fiction, instructions, non chronological reports and traditional tales. • Please see handout for expectations. How to support your child: • Encourage your child to use correct spellings, use correct punctuation and grammar when speaking and when writing. • Encourage and correct children’s pencil grip and letter formation in the cursive style – please get a mat to help your child at home. • Support your child by encouraging them to write notes to you, shopping lists, homework, birthday cards, emails, letters.
Maths • Maths is split into many areas – Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Length Mass and Weight, 2D and 3D shapes, Time, Money, Capacity and Volume, Position and Direction. Each unit will have one – two weeks teaching per term and will be reviewed later in the year. We use a lot of interactive and practical resources in Year 1, with more complex written methods being introduced in year 2. See handout for expectations.
Purple Mash • Children all have access to Purple Mash – Passwords will be sent home. I will often set little tasks linked to work they can explore. These set tasks will show up in their Alerts section. • If you feel your child completed their homework and would like more focused work they are welcome to explore Maths and English games on Purple Mash to develop their confidence in their homework area. • There are really good songs for times tables support. • Please encourage your child to access the activities section, they are all set to be age appropriate and there is a huge range including spelling, phonics, maths as well as topic related tasks.
E Safety • E-Safety is such a huge part of the computing curriculum. We teach this through stories and scenarios, as well as circle time and Purple Mash Activities. • We need parents to be open with children to a level in which you are comfortable when explaining the risks to children, if they are using the internet supervised and unsupervised. • We use Smarty the Penguin in class to teach us how to stay safe.
