  1. Clothing Care Do you know what these mean?

  2. List these words in order in which we should do them. • Wash clothes • Iron clothes • Pretreat • Place in clothes hamper • Dry clothes • Store clothes

  3. Let’s Iron • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMGlFCURebU

  4. Products • Detergent- powder or liquid • Similar to soap, but is less affected by hard water • Fabric Softener- liquid, crystals, dryer sheets, and even a bar • Also called a fabric conditioner, prevents static sling and makes fabric softer • Can be added to wash or placed in the dryer

  5. Setting stains • Stains can “set” which mean the stain becomes a part of the fabric itself and cannot be easily removed without harming the fabric • To avoid setting the stain- avoid heat, clean using appropriate cleansers, AND DO NO RUB THE STAIN

  6. Stain removal • Most stains are removed by dissolving the stain • There are different types of stain removers for different stains • Some stain removers are better at getting out certain types of stains

  7. Oxidizing removers • Household bleach- removes the color, but not always the stain • Used on whites and colorfast material (will not ruin the color) • Works on natural stains such as food, and grass • Hydrogen peroxide- also a bleaching agent • Use for blood stains, wine, juice, and pet stains

  8. Acetone • Found in nail polish remover (however buy regular acetone instead) • Removes glues, nail polish, rubber cement, and grease • Dawn dishwashing detergent works better on grease, and oil

  9. Others • Lemon juice- bleaches stains • Can be accelerated by exposing the stain to sunlight • Combine with cream of tartar for a stronger spot remover • Club soda- good with pet stains • Keeps stains from setting • Hair shampoo helps mud and cosmetic stains

  10. Equipment • Washing machines- • Top-loading machines • Least expensive and not as efficient as front loaders • Front loaders perform better at a higher cost and has a better spin cycle • Saves energy, water, and drying time • No-detergent washing- washer separates out hydrogen and oxygen from the wash water. Oxygen breaks down stains and removes dirt • Looks like the front loader

  11. Equipment- cont. • Dryers replaces clothes line and drying racks • Usually look like their washer sibling- can be top load or front load • Some dryers have moisture sensors that will keep the dryer hot enough to dry clothes and will stop when the clothes dry

  12. Pressing and Ironing • Pressing- put iron down and press hard to create or reinforce folds or creases • Often used in making clothes • Ironing- sliding an iron back and forth to remove wrinkles • Used to finish garments

  13. Dry cleaning • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec-wGlOaJeg
