  3. Comparing Printers • Ink-jet printer • Has a nozzle-like print head that sprays ink onto paper to form characters and graphic. • Use two cartridges • Black • Color • Small, light weight, and inexpensive. • Ink cartridges can be expensive.

  4. Comparing Printers • Laser printer: • Uses a technology that produces dots of light on a light-sensitive drum. • Require toner cartridge refills or replacements. • Uses for high-volume output or good quality printouts. • More expensive.

  5. Comparing Printers • What determines the quality of the printed images? • Printer resolution: determines the quality or sharpness of printed images and text. • Dpi: (dots per inch): number of dots printed per inch. • Good quality printers are rated from 2400 to 4800 dpi.

  6. Comparing Printers • How can I determine if a printer works quickly or not? • PPM ( Pages Per Minute) Color printouts take longer to print than black and white printouts. Most printers for personal or small business use are rated from 15 to 30ppm. More memory is required to print color images and graphic-intensive documents.

  7. Comparing Printers • Is it possible to buy a printer that can print on both sides of a page in one pass? • Duplex printer: can print on both sides of the paper. • This environment-friendly option saves paper but can slow down the print process.

  8. Duplex printer

  9. Comparing Printers • What if I want to use one printer for all the computers in my house? • Purchase a network-enabled printer that connects directly to the network, rather than one of the computers on a network. • Advantage: it can be placed in a position convenient for all network users.
