  1. Roots of club dance music Funk, disco, jazz, Rhythm and Blues, reggae, western classical music have all fed into dance music Music from around the world has also played a part The effect depends on what part of the world the dance music is from

  2. Dub • The art of taking an original song and remixing it can be traced back to the late 1960’s when Bob Marley’s producer King Tubby took some reggae tracks removed the vocals tracks and overdubbed some effects on the instrumental tracks • He would record all voices and instruments and put on the A side of the record and on the B side he would be a dub remix of the track • These dub artists became the first DJ’s. They were very popular as they were cheaper to hire than real musicians.

  3. Chicago House • In the mid 80’s DJ’s Frankie Knuckles and Farley Jackmaster Funk created a new sound named after the club where it was first played – The Warehouse. • They would take existing tracks and remix them, or cut them up and mix them with other tracks because they did not have enough new material to play • Sometimes DJ’s would bring a drum machine to accent the 4 on the floor drum beat

  4. Listening: Pump up the Volume (M/A/R/R/S) • Write Down all the lyrics you hear • What sounds are there in the percussion/drums, the bass and the vocals? • Describe the texture of the music . How does it change (if at all) as the track progresses?

  5. Acid House • The first acid house track was called Acid Tracks and was released in 1987 by Phuture • It used a Roland TB303 bass synth that was used with drum machines • The term Acid house has nothing to do with drugs • It was a term used to describe the squelchy bass sound of the bass synth • Acid House was very popular and led to the start of the rave scene in the UK in the late 1980’s

  6. New York Garage • Was much more melodic than House music and was influenced by soul and R’n’B • The name came from the name of the club where it was first played – The Paradise Garage • In the UK the Ministry of Sound was heavily influenced by the garage sound
