  1. The Divine Nature; Love • Living a life worthy, holiness • 2 Peter 1:1-15 • writing to those who claimed a real knowledge of Christ but continued in immoral behaviour • his execution appears imminent (AD 64 ?) • he leaves them a list

  2. vv 2 & 3 Knowledge of Jesus • Not just knowing the facts • But knowing Jesus himself thoroughly • The list that follows has this in mind

  3. v 4 - The Divine Nature • Being like Jesus • He is the image of the invisible God (Col 1:15) • God is Love (1 John 4:8) • And that is where the list comes to a conclusion

  4. v 5 - Make every effort • Make every effort to bring in alongside • yoking the qualities so they work together • Grace & Works • Supply/add • generous and costly cooperation • The list begins with Faith • Paul begins his list in in Romans 5 with faith (and ends it with love). • Faith, the same as Peter’s own (v1)

  5. v 5b Moral Excellence • Moral excellence • NIV goodness, KJV virtue • the proper fulfillment of something - a knife to cut, Eric Liddell to run - of a human being, to be like Jesus - be what you are supposed to be

  6. 5b Knowledge • To moral excellence add knowledge • wisdom that distinguishes good from bad • enquiry, investigation • knowledge helps us to understand what we are meant to be

  7. v 6-7 Self Control & Endurance • To knowledge add self control • self control a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:23) • submitting to the control of the indwelling Christ • to self control add endurance • endurance proves self control • endurance springs from faith in God’s promises (v4)

  8. Godliness & Brotherly Kindness • To perseverance add godliness • reverence towards God • a practical awareness of God in every aspect of our lives • To godliness add brotherly kindness • our godliness is expressed in our attitude to one another • bearing one another’s burdens, not gossiping etc

  9. Love - agape • Agape springs out of what, and who, Jesus is • It is not based on the object of our love • It is based in the One who loves us • To “agape”, is to partake of the Divine Nature (v4) and pass it on

  10. v 8 these qualities increasing • We cannot allow things to stagnate • We never “arrive” • We strive to attain true knowledge of Jesus Christ • We are to bear fruit - the likeness of Jesus • We only truly know Jesus as we become more like Him who IS love
