  1. 3 Options for Arranging Power for Your EV Charging Station Despite all the controversies, EVs are going nowhere. Charging infrastructure is the need of the hour, as the number of EVs on the road is increasing daily. Consequently, individuals and businesses plan to install an electric vehicle charging station on their premises. Many stakeholders are involved in installing an EV infrastructure, such as location holders, power distributors, EV charging station manufacturers like us, and charging point operators (CPOs). All stakeholders are essential for the process, especially power distributors. Afteralll, how will EVs get charged if you don’t have enough power supply? Initially, you need to identify the estimation of the power supply required in kilowatts (kW) for your station. You can have an estimation with a simple two-step process. First, decide the power load of your EV charger. Suppose, AC charger for two-wheeler requires 3.3 kW, whereas AC charger for four-wheeler demands 7.4 kW. Also, DC chargers need different power loads.

  2. Second, you need to decide the number of EV chargers for your EV infrastructure. Both these steps shall help you reach the estimated power supply your station may demand. If you find it difficult to determine the required power supply, we can help you to reach the estimation. Once you have your estimated power requirement, you must choose the power distributor. Henceforth, let’s understand the three alternatives through which you can arrange power for your EV charging stations. Option 1: Utilize An Existing Power Connection If your power supply matches your energy requirements, you may use an existing power connection to charge your electric vehicles. Generally, EV owners opt for this when they want private charging with a single charging point. Here are the steps you need to follow: 1.First, check the connection type available for a power supply. Also, does the connection type and sanctioned load support your EV charging? 2.If the sanctioned load is insufficient, you need to apply for the increase in the sanctioned load to the Financial Turnaround of Power Distribution Companies (DISCOMs). This process and beginning of operations may take some time and charges. 3.If the sanctioned load crosses the existing connection type’s power threshold, you need to change it with a three-phase or HT connection. The process includes the change of meter. 4.You must also check the available DT (Distribution Transformer) capacity. If the capacity of the DT is close to the three-phase LT connection or HT connection, you may have to apply for a new DT along with the necessary cables. You shall expect considerable time and cost for this process. When should you go for this option? ●This option is for properties with excess capacity of sanctioned load in existing power connections. ●This option is best for private and semi-public EV charging solutions. Option 2: Arrange A New Electricity Connection Businesses may want to install exclusive charging stations with the help of the EV Charging Solutions Provider in Ahmedabad, like us, for which you need to arrange a new electricity connection. Here is the process of arranging a new electricity connection:

  3. 1.You must compare the estimated power requirement and power connections - single-phase LT, three-phase LT, and HT connection. Whichever falls in the category, pick one and apply to the DISCOM. 2.For an LT connection, you can take a nearby DT into account. You need to install your own DT with the necessary cables for an HT connection. 3.If you need to install an HT connection, DISCOM may take this as part of their grid updates. You may have to pay for the installation charges. However, this will depend on the guidelines launched by a particular state. 4.You must own the charging space to get an exclusive connection installed. Alternatively, CPO can apply for a separate prepaid connection up to a certain load. You can pursue this on a condition - there must be an agreement between the space owner and prepaid connection. It also has to be permitted by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) Do you own a mall, supermarket, commercial park, or huge facilities? This concept is for you. Minus Metering Large establishments often have their own HT connection and exclusive DTs from which they can provide a separate LT metered connection for EV charging. DISCOMS can consider the provision of “minus metering.” In this provision, EV charging is done from the existing HT connection using a submeter. You can bill the energy used by an EV to the EV tariff. This kind of arrangement is cost-effective and easy to install. You can contact us to install EV chargers, as we are one of the leading EV charger manufacturers in Gujarat. When should you go for this option? ●This option is for you when you own a big restaurant, mall, theater, supermarket, hotel, corporate house, or similar establishments. ●You can go for this alternative if you have your own HT connection and exclusive DTs. Option 3: Installing a Captive Renewable Energy Generation EV owners or CPOs may choose to install a captive renewable energy generation. In simple words, installation of a charging station powered by solar energy. The first aspect we need to consider while installing these kinds of charging facilities is space. For a 1kWp solar PV system setup, you need at least a 10 Square meter area. You can get a solar system installed on the roof of your premises.

  4. Further, you need to assess the benefits of captive renewable energy generation for your facility. You can always reach out to us if you find this process difficult. Additionally, you can benefit from net metering. It is the energy used after deducting the power returned to the grid. Let us put it in a simple manner. Due to the latest technology, the grid can store energy produced by your premises. Here, you are the user as well as the producer. Thus, you are a prosumer. As a prosumer, you must pay the bills only for the net energy used. Many states have launched guidelines for net metering. We are just a call away if you need any help with following the regulations. When should you go for this option? ●Solar energy is for you when you want to leave a greener footprint behind. ●Solar energy is the best alternative if you want to spend less on charging your or your stakeholders’ EVs in the long run. Conclusion In a nutshell, you need to draw in many stakeholders while installing EV infrastructure. However, the power distributor is the most important one, as you go through the entire process for charging EVs. You should consider these alternatives for a power supply and pick one that is the best for your facility. In case of any queries, you can always reach out to us.
