West Elementary • Possibly 10 Full-Day sections of Pre-K • 1-A.M. section and 1-P.M. section • 20 students maximum per State requirement • Early Childhood Certified Teacher along with Full time Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) in every classroom • 1850+ students PK through 4th grade • 6 building campus
Times for Pre-K • Full Day 8:15-3:00pm • Half-Day • A.M. 9:15-11:45am • P. M. 1:15-3:45 pm • Grace Living Center 8:50-3:25pm • Drop-off and pick-up times are 10-15 minutes before class and 10-15 minutes after class.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures • Depending on the location of your child’s classroom, you will be assigned to a specific drop-off and pick-up location. • If possible, your child’s car seat will need to be positioned to the curb-side location for safety. • Stay in your car and pull forward to keep the line moving. • Please pull over out of the car line and buckle your child.
Early Childhood Philosophy of JPS The early childhood programs at JPS are child-oriented, family-focused programs that foster the growth of the whole child. The programs provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum that enhances cognitive, speech/language, social/emotional and motor skill development. We recognize that children learn through play and discovery and we strive to create structured play opportunities which provide an environment that stimulates social growth, skill development, and motor coordination. We believe that each child is unique and individual differences should be accepted and respected. We foster inclusion of children with disabilities with typical developing peers. We believe all children can reach their full potential in a secure environment that promotes self esteem and respect for others.

Pre-K Class Schedule 9:151:15 Class Begins- Group time (Circle Time) -includes attendance, songs, community circle/sharing, Flag Salute, Creed, book related studies 9:401:35 Outside Play 10:001:55 Writer’s Workshop, Character habits, Social Studies, Health (alternate) -includes mini-lesson, book related to theme, Word Work lessons (writing may include writing folders) 10:202:15 Literacy Centers/Stations -all centers open with literacy components, free-choice 11:103:05 Music/Large Motor Movement/Songs 11:103:15 Group time (Closing Circle Time) -Calendar, Weather -Math Science, or theme-related lesson and/or Reader’s Workshop (may include read to self) 11:403:35 Pack-Up 11:453:45 Class Ends
Media/Library All pre-k students will visit the Media Center each week. Students will check-out books and the books will remain in the classroom. Students will develop life skills of responsibility with library books before kindergarten.
Lap-time / Reading Logs Please read 20-minutes every day with your child and initial in the log. This is a school-wide expectation that begins in Pre-K and continues through 4th grade.
Everyday Mathematics Homelinks sent home via Email about once a week.

Things to do over the summer to help prepare your child for Pre-K: • Work on self-help skills: putting on/off a jacket, zipping/buttoning, turning a jacket inside/out, putting on/off shoes, etc. -we LOVE Velcro -flip flops are dangerous on the playground • Practice using the bath-room by him/her self • Practice writing first name • Practice holding a pencil, crayon, and/or marker - using the correct grip • Practice holding and cutting with child-sized scissors • Practice: listening ears, sharing, cleaning up, and patiently waiting • Practice proper hand-washing techniques with your child • Talk about school with your child • READ, READ, READ!

Backpacks should be large enough for folders. No wheels on backpacks, please. Please always keep a change of clothes in the backpacks. Also, please LABEL the clothes, backpacks, and any jackets/coats brought to school.
Snacks Each child can have a snack each day. The classroom teacher will decide how that snack will be managed and at what time of the day. JWE encourages healthy snacks that can be eaten quickly. Children will have access to the drinking fountains and bathrooms all day.
Quiet Activities • Children need a small amount of time each day to “rest” their brains. • Plastic Mats will be purchased by PTAG. • The times will be after lunch and anywhere from 20-40 minutes. Children sleeping will be left to sleep for the first semester of school. • During the second 9 weeks of school, children not sleeping will have the option to read, color, and/or watch videos quietly on their mats.

Send lunch money to school with your child or pay online at mylunchmoney.com (transaction fee applies). • You are welcome to eat with your child anytime you can! • Your child may also bring a lunch from home (sack or lunch box/bag). • We would LOVE to have parent volunteers the first couple of weeks of school to help! • Questions?
Volunteer Opportunities • Your child’s teacher may want volunteers in the classroom. • As a volunteer, you may: • Assist students in center activities inside the classroom • Work with small groups of children on math and reading skills • Prepare instructional materials for the teacher • To volunteer you must: • Complete a short volunteer training. • Sign up with your child’s teacher
Parent Teacher Action Group (PTAG) • The PTAG is a volunteer organization of parents, teachers and administrators who work together to promote quality education for our children. • PTAG provides Daily Agendas to all students K-4th grade. • PTAG provides Cash/products for our school through rebate programs such as Box Tops for Education, Campbell’s Labels, Staples, and Office Depot. • PTAG provides Subscriptions for periodicals for each classroom. • PTAG provides Items for Teacher Wish Lists. • PTAG provides funds for field trips.
