Strategies Listen for: • Key words • Non-verbal cues • Context • Activating background knowledge • Guessing at meaning • Seek clarification • General gist
Listening Tips • Eye contact • Relaxed attention • Open mind • Word pictures • No interruptions/solutions • Wait for pauses to ask Qs • Ask relevant questions only • Feel the speaker’s feelings • Give feedback • Think about what is NOT said
Feedback skills • Listen out loud by: Offering Verbal cues • Relevant questions • Paraphrasing statements • Reflections • Affirmations Offering non-verbal cues • Smiles and frowns • Hand and body gestures • Eye contact/ movements
Ask what the person is thinking or feeling Let the speaker finish their thought before determining what question to ask next Be aware of your own assumptions Stay present Remember this is NOT about you Treat the person as unique Ask questions when concerns are raised Fully understand needs before recommending a solution Great Listeners
