KGBV Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya • Provides access and quality education to the girls of the most disadvantaged group in rural India • Targets girls who are drop-outs from primary schools • Girls will complete three year of schooling in one year • Estimated strength around 100 girls per school • Government of India launched the scheme in 2004 and have sanctioned 1180 KGBVs • State of Uttar Pradesh will implement 124 KGBVs KGBV being implemented by Mahila Samakhya in Uttar Pradesh

KGBV Mahila Samakhaya, Uttar Pradesh • Mahila (Women) Samakhaya (Equality) (MS) working for women’s empowerment • Started by Government of India in 1989 • In Uttar Pradesh MS active in 16 districts • MS will implement around 60 KGBVs in 16 districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP) over next few years • Focus areas of Mahila Samakhya (MS) - Education - Economic empowerment - Health - Rights and Governance

KGBV Mahila Samakhaya and Asha • Asha Munich started working with MS in January, 2006 • Asha Delhi organized Right to Information workshop for Saharanpur MS women in April 2006 • In May 2006 started working on KGBV • Besides KGBV we plan to work on social entrepreneurship models • Over a period of time convert KGBV into block development center for girls and women

KGBV Asha’s Contribution for KGBV • Worked with MS to critically evaluate the government design for KGBV • Suggested expert Architect in school design • Working with MS and Architect to evolve best design for the residential school • Fundraise the additional cost to build quality schools • Work with MS to lobby with government for more funding per school in 11th five year plan KGBV Mathura

KGBV Government Guidelines on KGBV • KGBV in Educationally Backward Blocks as per census data of 2001 • Schools are for disadvantaged section in social and economic hierarchy (lower castes and below poverty line families) • Per KGBV government sanctioned Rs19.05 lakhs (approx. 40,000 EUR) as running expenditure per year • One time construction cost sanctioned approx. 50,000 EUR The construction cost too less for 100 girls residential school Inauguration in UP on 13th August
