Sec 4 – Geometric Sequences Learning TargetS: I WILL WRITE THE FORMULA FOR A GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE AND USE IT TO MAKE PREDICTIONS. Homework: pg 677 #1-7, 61-63
Ex 1: Quality Core Practice Use SOCRATIVE to give your answer.
Ex 1: Geometric Sequences in Real-Life • Julian sees a new band at a concert. He e-mails a link forthe band’s Website to 5 of his friends. They each forward the link to 5 of their friends. The link is forwarded again following the same pattern. How many people will receive the link on the eighth round of e-mails?
Nth term of a geometric sequence • The nth term of a geometric sequence in which the first term and the common ratio is given has the following formula: • What do each of the variables represent? Hint: You will not always need to subtract 1 from the exponent so be very careful to read the problem.
Ex 3: When do I subtract? • Shira receives a joke in an e-mail that asks her to forward it to four of her friends. She forwards it, then each of her friends forwards it to four of their friends, and so on. If the pattern continues, how many people will receive the e-mail on the ninth round of forwarding? • You decide to buy a new Mustang for $30,000. As soon as you drive off of the sales lot the price depreciates by 30% and will continue to do so every year. How much will the car be worth after 5 years?
Ex 4: Writing a formula from a sequence • Write the equation for the nth term of each sequence: • 0.5, 2, 8, 32,… • -.25, 2, -16, 128, …
