Data Analytics 2012 Fall Crime Data Mining System Fang jin, Yi Xiao, Wei Wang, Zhenhe Pan Instructor: Dr. Changtien Lu Department of Computer Science, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Project Introduction System design As national security has become a significant concern for all law-enforcement organization, a crime information system that is able to process large amount of data in a short period of time is needed for investigators to generate patterns of crimes and predict future ones. Such information system must make efficient use of crime data for storage, processing, and visualization to its users. This paper describes the design and implementation of the Crime Data Mining System. The Crime Data Mining System is developed to meet the needs of law enforcement agencies to process, store and search crime cases fast and efficiently. The Crime Data Mining System allows users to import data from various sources and in different forms. It persists and indexes data in the MySQL relational databases management system so data manipulation can be performed efficiently. Case information can be found and the location of the case is also located on the map. In order to provide clues to a crime cases, all similar cases in the database can also be listed for the user to study. All law enforcement agencies can use this system to search for clues about crime cases, based on the similar cases found by our algorithm which takes into account the date, location and description of crimes. Also, the geographical distribution of crimes of different categories in DC area is mapped onto map in the Crime Clusterer system, which enables the police to identify the “hot-spots” of crimes so police force can be allocated efficiently.
