Explore the benefits of incorporating periodic measurements into Beacon Requests for improved roaming and dynamic data rate selection. This document discusses extensions, various measurement/reporting types, ACKs for multicast/broadcast requests, and potential uses with examples. Motion is made to include these extensions in both Beacon and other measurements for better functionality.

Beacon Request Extensions for Periodic Measurments Current Beacon Req: Periodic Extensions: BSSID specifies which AP to measure when several APs may be detectable on a given channel. Broadcast BSSID is used when AP BSSID is unknown. Joe Kwak, InterDigital

ACKs for Multicast/Broadcast Requests • Measurement Requests are Management Action Frames which require the STA to take the specified action. Therefore, the protocol needs to insure that the Measurement Request frames are correctly received at the intended destination STAs. • When Measurement Requests are unicast, receipt of Measurement Request is automatically acknowledge at Link level. • When measurement requests are multicast or broadcast: • In the case of a single, immediate Measurement Request, the request is acknowledged by the Measurement Report containing the measurement result. • In the case of a single, non-immediate Measurement Request (i.e. future start time), the request is acknowledged by sending a null Measurement Report. • When the requested measurement is periodic, the request is acknowledged by sending a null Measurement Report. • Using null Measurement Reports to acknowledge Measurement Request under these conditions is proposed in draft specification text for Periodic Beacon Requests. Joe Kwak, InterDigital
Potential Uses for Periodic Beacon Measurements • Periodic measurements reduce management traffic: single measurement request produces multiple reports but only when relevant. • Absolute Threshold crossings on PSNI measures are ideal to trigger data rate changes. • Absolute Threshold crossings on RCPI are ideal for proximity detectors for location. • Relative Threshold wrt serving AP detects conditions for handoff. • Many other potential uses.
