There’s a party in the yard and you aren’t sure if you will be able to stream the music seamlessly? You can’t blame poor wi-fi connectivity because even the most secure home routers do have signal limitations. So, do we have an option? Wi-fi range extenders and mesh networks are two commonly used devices to improve the signal strength in the house. Range extenders work as a medium that transmits the signals received from the router to remote areas in the house. These clone the configuration of the router and act as regular router. A mesh wifi router network, as the name suggests, is a set of routers that connect with each other and amplify the signal strength. Extending the Wi-Fi outdoors When you have plans to extend the range of wi-fi to outdoors, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. •Make a list of the power sources and outlets at the outdoors where you want wi-fi connectivity. Remember that installing the equipment next to the exterior wall will provide a good range. •Factors such as humidity and rain can interrupt with wi-fi signals, reducing the range of the wi-fi device. You need to look for equipment that have weatherproofing features and sufficient power to ensure seamless wi-fi connectivity during bad weather. •Identify the elements such s metal fencing or walls that can interfere with signal transmission. Prefer keeping the range extender or mesh network off such areas as they weaken the signal strength. Choosing between extenders and mesh networks Let’s look at the pros and cons of each. Range extenders These are budget friendly and easy to set up. However, you may need to login repeatedly and there could be interference with the router. Compatibility could be another problem with range extenders. Mesh networks The in-built redundancy in these devices reduces signal blackout. They provide more consistent and better speed connection with a single login. On the downside, mesh wifi with router networks are more expensive and you may have to upgrade the wifi router. What next? Instead of rushing into buying multiple extenders or nodes for mesh networks, start with less and add more once you know what all areas need better signals. Prepare a budget and always opt for waterproof, weather-resistant devices.
