Introduction • The War Between the States was also a war between brothers, cousins, friends and neighbors - and some of them were women. We know from certain military records, antique books, and lately some newer books, that women served as nurses, vivandieres, sutlers, and as Union and Confederate soldiers, and even spies. • Historical records verify the fact that over eighty women were either wounded or killed at various battles during the Civil War. It is estimated that over 400 women served in the Civil War on both sides, not counting the thousands who served as nurses.
Task • Your task is to prepare an editorial news story detailing the life of one female Civil War participant; weather a spy, nurse, soldier. • You will then prepare a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the contribution of the woman you choose. • An overview of the steps you will need to complete: • 1. Explore the life of a Civil War woman most interesting to you. • 2. Research your selected woman with notes and sources cited • 3. prepare a news story on the individual • 4. Prepare a PowerPoint highlighting the individual.
Process • The following is a step-by –step guide on how to accomplish your task. • 1. Do research to select the woman most interesting to you. • 2. Begin researching your selection • 3. Complete the Knowledge Worksheet and Source cards • 4. Write your editorial news article • 5. Prepare PowerPoint presentation • 6. Check self –evaluation sheet

Conclusion • You have now complete research of a Civil War Woman, written an editorial and created a power point. • Include the resources you used, and the knowledge worksheet with your final project.
