  1. Lessons from the Parque Marino Motu Motiro Hiva: Carlos Gaymer, PhD Professor, Universidad Católica del Norte Republic of Chile

  2. Motu Motiro Hiva Marine Park Carlos F. Gaymer & Gustavo San Martín OCEANA/Eduardo Sorensen

  3. A big jump for Chile (0.03 to 4.4 % EEZ)

  4. OCEANA/Alex Muñoz OCEANA/Alex Muñoz OCEANA/Alex Muñoz OCEANA/Alex Muñoz

  5. Highlights Easter Island Motu Motiro Hiva  Biodiversity hotspot. Highest endemism known for fishes in Oceanic Islands (>70%) Abundant top predators (43% of fish), inverted biomass pyramid  Large fish biomass (1.2 t ha-1) compared to most Pacific reefs  50% cover of live coral (excellent shape)  Abundant endemic lobsters (Panulirus pascuensis)  Extreme isolation (fragility and extinction risk)  Impressive deep water marine biodiversity and new species OCEANA/Eduardo Sorensen OCEANA/Eduardo Sorensen

  6. New Motu Motiro Hiva Marine Park

  7. Benefits from being a large-scale MPA Protection of the whole ecosystem and processes Ensure protection of a large portion of the habitat of larvae, juvenile and adults of highly migratory animals (e.g. tuna) and those with a large dispersion phase (e.g. endemic lobster) OCEANA/Eduardo Sorensen

  8. Global contribution of BIOT and MMH Spalding et al. 2010

  9. Challenges because of being a large-scale MPA Surveillance and enforcement (multi-institution task and new technologies) Implement a particular management plan with the 5 programs that the Chilean law requests Funding OCEANA/Eduardo Sorensen

  10. Progress made and/or new challenges faced Increasing local awareness of marine park importance  Development of remote surveillance strategy Expansion of Motu Motiro Hiva (150.000 to 411.000 km2) Hawaii-Easter Island cooperation agreement

  11. What have we learned so far? Develop a participative process (implementation and management) Incorporate cultural aspects and traditional knowledge Generate capacities in local people OCEANA/Eduardo Sorensen

  12. Thank you OCEANA/Eduardo Sorensen
