  1. Sentence Structure, Dictionary/Thesaurus Skills, and Paragraphing Objectives TestReview

Study Guide • On a piece of notebook paper, please neatly write your heading. • Title the page “Study Guide 2/18” • As we review the objectives, there will be something to jot down from each slide. Write neatly so that you will be able to read it later when you are studying. • You will need a highlighter for some of the notes. • Let’s begin!

  3. Sentence Structure Skip a line under the title line and write “Sentence Structure.” Then, write: Simple = 1 independent clause Compound = 2 independent clauses Complex = 1 independent and 1 dependent clause Compound-Complex = 2 independent clauses and at least 1 dependent

  4. Then, write “Examples”. S= Nathan ate a Starburst. CD= Lauren ran track, and Amy played volleyball. CX= When I saw my grade, I clapped my hands. CD-CX= We went to the movies, and we ate popcorn when we got hungry.

  5. Write: There are 3 ways to make a compound sentence: Comma FANBOYS Semicolon ; ;HABITFONTS,

  6. Write: Complex sentences always have subordinating conjunctions AAAWWUBBIS or relative pronouns 4WT.

  7. Write: Dictionary/Thesaurus Skills Guide words are: • On the top of the page • Are the first and last word on the page • Help you find your word

  8. Write: Spelling strategies- Ask someone, look it up, sound it out, write it out

  9. Write: Thesauruses- provide synonyms for words Help with revising

  10. Write: You may use the Dictionary on both days of Writing STAAR and on the Reading STAAR. There is a Punctuation Guide at the back to help you with editing.

  11. Write: Paragraphing A new paragraph is shown by indenting.

  12. Highlighter Time • Go through your Study Guide and Highlight all of the underlined words if you haven’t done so already. • Please review the guide tonight. • You will receive bonus points on the test tomorrow when you turn in this guide.
